Beach Front dinner Oahu
Greetings. As noted in an earlier thread, my wife and I will be in Waikiki for a few days at the end of this month. We would like to have a nice dinner "on the beach". For example, a setting like Mama's on Maui or Huggo's on Big Island would be nice. Good food would of course be helpful. :) In a search of past threads, I mostly found recommendations for restaurants based on quality of food. Plus, some of those are a bit old. We'll have a car, so we can travel if necessary, though closer to Waikiki so that we don't have a long drive home would be nice. Thanks in advance.

Michel's at the Colony Surf Hotel, perhaps?

Thanks Slippahs. Any other ideas out there? I appreciate the help.

Hoku's at the Mandarin Oriental - not sure if they have any outside tables, though. The Plumeria Cafe downstairs definitely does have outside seating, though it's not the same fancy dining experience.

If want want romantic, secluded and on the beach, try the Cabanas at the Kahala Mandarin. From the website:
With a direct view of the Pacific Ocean, Cabanas Seaside Grill is perfect for intimate dinners and relaxed social gatherings. Guests dine under specially constructed cabanas, with the choice of enjoying the sunset whilst dining, or drawing the drapes for maximum privacy. TF  |
We've always enjoyed the Golden Dragon at the Hilton Hawaiian Village. There are some outdoor tables with very nice views.

Hard to beat the Golden Dragon on a Friday night - best seats in the house for the evening fireworks display. ^
Gotta love the lobster curry with deep fried haupia... |

Thanks again everyone for some good suggestions. What about a beachside restaurant not so expensive? These look like good possibilities, but is there anything "quaint" and beachside, not necessarily gourmet?

Just fyi, borrow the dining card from someone from a Hawaii Entertainment Book and you get 1 entree for free (up to ~$23)

Duke's is great too. Or... might I suggest doing a little planning ahead of time, purchasing a picknet basket, filling it with some goodies (say, a plate lunch), purchasing some wine and having a nice romantic dinner out on Waikiki Beach/Queen's while the sun sets? Granted, the beach is overly crowded during sunset hour, but it might be something to plug in the back of your mind. ;) |
Moderate pricing for sunsets
I've always liked the Mai Tai Bar at the Royal Hawaiian. I'm partial to their NY Steak. You're right on the beach with live music. Can't be beat if you're walking around Waikiki.
Want to drive a tiny bit? Then I recommend Las Marianas on Sand Island Road. There's no beach, but it's located at a small marina fronting the water and has a very reasonable menu with a wide variety of good food. And the atmosphere is something you'll talk about for years to come. Think old kitch Hawaiian. And if you're up for another short drive, then how about Nicco's at Pier 38. No dinner, but terriffic breakfast and lunch. This is the place located right next to the fish market, and the owner walks accross the parking lot and picks up all sorts of great fish right off the boats each morning. Very casual, limited view, but you'll feel right at home if you like dining with locals. My favorite is the ahi and egg breakfast. Grilled ahi steak with eggs the way you request. I hope this helps. |
