I'd definitely go look over at the KonaWeb forum and post this. It's read daily by Big Island local folks who are happy to offer suggestions about specific things to see/do. http://www.konaweb.com/forums/visiting.cgi |

If I had to make a difficult choice and stay on the big island for only 2.5 days, and 5.5 days on Kauai - would that do any justice to the Big Island trip? I have a very good idea on things I can do in Kauai (there were such fantastic threads in this forum on this topic), but am a bit lost on Big Island. Agree totally. If you can only spend such a short time on the Big Island, you should pick one island and spend the whole time there. You're not likely to tire of Kauai or the Big Island in eight days :)

If you have only 2 days to spend on the Big Island spend it in Volcanoes National Park. There is really no where else like it on Earth. A lot of hiking and other related activities, plus if you get lucky, some great lava viewing. There are many different places to stay in Volcano Village, or stay at Volcano House inside the Park. If by any chance you are military or DOD civilian you can stay at Kilauea Military Camp, a rec facility inside the park that has great accommodations.
