I went last summer. I didn't think it was a great value. Perhaps it was the long drive from Wailea? Perhaps my expectations were too high...

I'd actually take this in a different direction. If you don't want to go over to West Maui (Lahaina), maybe make the short 20 minute trip to Paia?

On our way to Hana, it looked interesting (maybe too touristy)?

Paia was also mentioned in The Wave by Susan Casey as a place to see a different side of HI.

YMMV...

Personally, I'd make it over to Maui Tropix on Dairy Rd. to buy matching boardshorts to the rash guard shirt I bought last summer.

They steadfastly refuse to mail order -- "fly here, buy here", she told me as I was checking out.... Should have listened...

Suggestions for 6 hour layover at OGG

I booked a same-day mileage run OAK-OGG and as a result I have a six hour layover in the middle of the day. I have been to Maui before and have seen most of the sites. I just thought if there was enough time to leave the airport and go to a beach for a bit, that would be nice. I believe there is a bus you can take from the airport, although I don't know how practical that is. I will just be traveling with a back pack, so just need to be back at the airport with enough time to get through security.

Thanks!

Baldwin Beach Park - Maui Bus
Kanaha Beach Park - walk
Kamaole Beaches I, II, III (Kihei) - Maui Bus

I think I would prefer Baldwin for R&R between flights. If the weather happens to be overcast around the airport/Baldwin/Kanaha, I would head for Kihei.

10 hour layover OGG what to do?

Hi all,

Poor me, a 10 hour layover in paradise. I arrive early afternoon and leave on a red-eye. Where should I go?

I'm partial to chilling on a beach and finding a good bar. Of course if there is some super cool touristy thing to do I would consider it.

I'll be there mid-week.

Help me find fun!

Thanks

Well, the first thing that came to my mind was renting a car and driving to the top of Haleakala. I don't know if it qualifies as super-cool, but is definitely a touristy thing and the kind of experience you can't get many other places.

You can check with a nearby hotel to see if they have day rates and enjoy at the pool or beach.

Thanks for the ideas!

If you find a good bar, find a good driver or you may have a longer layover than you anticipated.:)

Or you can just drive toward Paia, which is a cool and funky town and there are some great beaches nearby, including H.A. Baldwin, which is nice for swimming and boogie boarding, and Ho'okipa, which, while not a great swimming beach due to the significant break and coral, is generally considered to be the best windsurfing beach on the planet. You will also be near Mama's Fish House, which is one of the best (albeit priciest) restaurants on Maui. Much less costly dining spots can be found in Paia town.

Great ideas!

I may check out Paia...driving appropriately of course.

And thanks for finding thread I could not.

You guys rock!

Bumping this for advice; flying from Hilo to Honolulu and there are a few flights with a few hour(s) layover at OGG (Maui); is there anything for our family worth doing in that short amount of time, or is it not going to be worth that hassle?

Not a good idea; you would barely get out of the airport and would have to turn around. Get a non-stop from Hilo to Honolulu.

+1, unless you have PreCheck, and you are dying to pick up the original Maui Potato Chip at their factory:

If you want to get some, call in advance to make sure they will be open and that they will have inventory for you.
