I've been to the big island several times in the past year, all with National rental car. Aside from my free days, one thing that seems to be common is if you look too far ahead rates can actually be higher. Keep looking....sometimes I've found cheaper rates just 1-3 weeks before the rental dates.

Also remember Jan/Feb is whale watching season + if there are any holidays that draws lot of family for vacation those can jack up rates as well.

If you're staying right on Ali'i drive it is feasible to walk and do most things without needing a rental car.

For sure. Heck, usually I try to check once a day if possible! Great thing about rental car reservation is that they are easy to cancel and rebook so basically keep checking, book and cancel if you find cheaper rates!

Iíve got a full size booked at Hilo Airport (am a PC member). Does if you still have to visit the desk here and what sort of upgrades they generally do?

What is a "PC member"? Hilo is a small airport and I'm guessing you'll probably not get an upgrade but who knows.

In all my years of interisland flying, I have always had to visit the desk. They should have a separate line for elite members.
