Moving to Hawaii (Oahu) - Tips for Finding Temporary Housing?
Our house has sold and we are winging it and packing up and moving to Oahu! Our intent is to find a rental and decide what to do next.
We are two adults with two 9 pound well trained toy poodles. Poodles are hypoallergenic and don't shed - you can verify that if you don't believe me. People who are allergic to dogs are not likely to be allergic to poodles, which is why we got them. My husband is allergic to dogs. :) Is anyone aware of a rental we could look into? We prefer short-term with the option to go month to month and will care for your home as if it was ours. Furnished, preferably, since we are leaving behind most of our furniture but we will do unfurnished. Time frame is July/August and we will pay for a month or two in advance if we're not there to secure something suitable. We will definitely consider an AirBnB or VRBO if we could deal with the owner directly to avoid the obscene fees they charge. 2-3 bedrooms, 2 baths, washer/dryer required. We will be putting almost all of our things into storage. Ideal location would be east Honolulu to Kailua. Any help/advice would be appreciated. |

Hawaii’s quarantine law is designed to protect residents and pets from potentially serious health problems associated with the introduction and spread of rabies. All dogs and cats, regardless of age (puppies and kittens included) or purpose, must comply with Hawaii’s dog and cat import requirements. Chapter 4-29 Hawaii Administrative Rules, governs the importation of dogs, cats and other carnivores into Hawaii. This law states that dogs and cats meeting specific pre- and post-arrival requirements may qualify for 5 Day Or Less quarantine program, which has a provision for direct release at Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (Honolulu) after inspection. Furthermore, the law requires dogs and cats that do not meet all of the specific 5 Day Or Less program requirements to be quarantined for up to 120 days upon arrival in Hawaii. Please read thoroughly the following documents containing details on the rabies quarantine programs for importing dogs and cats.

I would hire a rental realtor :-) yeah 5 days can feel super awful. I’ll assume OP is aware of the dog quarantining rules. You can pay a little extra and do more paperwork and tests for same day release. |
Rentals with pets are tough to find here. Not impossible, but more difficult. I am helping friends who have two cats try to find a new condo to buy (they live in my building currently but want a bigger place) and it is proving very difficult so bear that in mind when gauging the ease of finding a place to buy unless you are looking at a single family house. Also, if looking at condos, do a LOT of research into the building itself. Not just the financials and meeting minutes. Ask around, to everyone you can think of including building residents. There are very few good, well-run buildings and a whole lot of really bad ones but you would never know unless you dig deep. If your realtor is local, he should have good insight. A lot of buildings here are in bad trouble due to deferred maintenance (structural, drain/vent lines, etc) and new (expensive) requirements from the C&C such as sprinkler/alarm retro-fits because of the Marco Polo fire a few years ago. Maintenance fees are high but you probably know that already. There are literally only a handful of buildings I would consider in this area.

We don't want a condo, so it sounds like it's a good thing. We don't even want to buy a townhouse. :)
Thank you. |
My vacation home doesn't meet your requirements but my agent (that I highly recommend) also does monthly rentals and I'd be happy to put you in touch, DM me

Thank you. Sent a message. Also, how close is your rental home to my requirements? We are somewhat flexible for the right place.
