Phew, without punctuation that paragraph got me breathless (almost like your original itinerary)! Thanks for letting us know how it went. Good to hear you had a nice trip, hopefully your wife enjoyed it, too.

Wailua Shave Ice is excellent. Creamy topping -- unique.

JoJo's also very good.

I liked The Fresh Shave (Koloa town).

Beware the Kalalau trail. The trail gave way under my foot and I seriously injured my ankle. Fracture, torn ligaments, crutches, wheelchair, Xrays, MRIs the whole shebang.

I've done the first 1-2 miles of that trail before and it was one of the most difficult hikes of that length I've ever done. The uneven surface really makes it feel like you've hiked twice as far.

Remember you need reservation for parking or shuttle for Kalalau. It’s pretty slick in places, will need to be extra careful with the baby.

That reservation system they're using is stupid. I drove all the way to Hāʻena State Park last month and the people at the gate didn't let me in. The guy asked, do you have a reservation? Nope. Of course, because no one actually told me I would have needed a reservation (I got to Maui every year but hadn't been to Kauaʻi in several years), I didn't even have a chance to grab one. The last time I was there, I just drove in and parked. No need to hassle with stupid reservations. I kept checking the website, and they wanted something like $35 per person just to take a shuttle out to the parking lot, even if we just wanted to stand on the beach for 15 minutes, take pictures looking down the coast, and leave. And no reservations for parking ever opened up. Or, they said, I could come back after 7pm (and probably get back to the Koloa area after 8:30pm). They really need to just reserve some parking spaces for people to use for 30 minutes max if you want to just stand on the beach and take photos looking down the coast. Having done the Kaʻena Point hike, the Makapuʻu lighthouse hike, and hiking all the way to the west side of Larsen's Beach this year (where I got some interesting drone footage of Zuckerberg's house and property), I really didn't have any desire to do yet another hike.

Rental Cars - A word to the wise

Speaking of planning..I flew to LIH yesterday. I had a car rental reservation with Budget. I apparently forgot to add my Fast Break number into the reservation. There was a huge line, 25-30 people at the rental counter and only 3 or 4 agents, depending on who was on break or dealing with other issues. I waited an hour and a half in line. The person next to me on the shuttle walked up to the counter and picked up his envelope and key and was out of there in seconds. The good news is that my frustrations were lessened when the nice lady gave me a red Camaro convertible (rather than the compact Kia I had reserved).

So, my suggestions: ALWAYS join the "club" of the agency you're using and remember to enter it into the reservation.

Always reserve a subcompact or compact (if the size of your party allows it in case you don't get lucky). My 20 years of experience going to Kauai is that they usually run out of small cars and you will often be upgraded at no charge).

Just a note to add to the above post. If you book your car through an OTA (Costco, PL, Chase UR, Expedia, etc) it may not help to add your number. The last time I booked a car for a trip to OGG I thought I'd find my name of their "preferred customer" board. But it was not to be. The agent, can't remember which car rental company it was, said: "sorry, you have to book directly with our company." Always good advice to add your Customer Number but it may not always work. Thanks for the reminder ILuvParis.

Good point. Costco used to let you add it (IIRC). This time we used my partner's work discount code - much cheaper than Costco.

I guess one should evaluate whether the discount will be worth the possibility of waiting in an endless line.

One of those crowd-control pandemic ideas turned money-maker that will likely stick around forever now. Waimea Canyon also charges the $10 per vehicle and $5/pp entry, but at least there’s no reservation required. I’ve done the Kalalau to Hanakapi’ai at least 3 times before, but committing to it with a non-refundable advance reservation for a specific date and limited time window is not for me. There are plenty of other trails to explore on aloha time.

great to read the suggestions esp about the car. I had that issue in OGG in the past.

I like the casual “got a little lost” comment - I am obviously NOT a hiker and I’ll walk on trails. I definitely am not the type to hike on “dirt” outside my home city. I can walk on sidewalks fine.
