COVID-19 Impact on Car Rental Rates in Hawaii (Historic Low Rates Now Much Higher)
About 3 or 4 months ago I reserved a midsize SUV for ~$950 for 4 weeks. Two weeks ago I canceled and rebooked for ~$750. Checked again tonight and rebooked for ~$550.
So recheck your rates if you're renting a car. We are visiting Maui but I'm sure all the islands are the same.
[EDITED on 2/18: Rates seems to back to "normal" now.]

We're going to Maui in February and the best we can find, through Costco, is about $333 per week. What car rental agency are you using?

I'm using my Chase UR points which gives us about a ~33% discount (which books via Expedia). But check Expedia, Dollar and Budget. But you may have to wait til a week or two out. Plus, Feb is a busier time than Jan. Good luck.

Check Hertz We had a week long mid size rental over Thanksgiving for just a bit over $200.00.

Check hotwire too. We had a rate via national this last 3 weeks (peak season) for ~$950. Shaved $400 and still got it from National.

Thanks for all your suggestions, we will check into the other options today
! We usually use Costco because a second driver has no fee, and we can easily cancel and rebook when a less expensive rate is available.

Also check:

I’ve normally gotten the best rates with them.

Chech rules of various agencies.....some don't charge for spouse/domestic partner (both of you over 25) to be additional driver (AVIS).

Join Thrifty Blue Chip loyalty program and spouse is free. They are shady though. For example they charged me a late fee of $16 per day in addition to the stated $9.99 for each extra day. As if they were running out of cars. If I had told them I was returning late they would have charged me a change fee. I never had either of these happen with National. National Emerald Club gives you family members and business associates free.

Turo rates are rock bottom too in Hawaii. You can rent a Jeep through Turo for a fraction of what the traditional rental companies are charging.

Thanks again for the help. Will join loyalty programs-no problem. Never heard of Turo. Just checked and they have great rates!
