Is it common in this area for a storm to move from east to west?

Well, from Sunday onward, all of the effects specific to hurricanes and tropical storms (heavy rains, winds, flash floods, storm surges, etc.) will impact the Big Island and, to a lesser extent, all of the islands of the HI chain:

Or, better yet, what with HI do when they find out that Douglas has violated quarantine by going to every single island in the chain...

So far relatively no big deal, although I went to the store and stocked up a little. Precautionary, I pulled all of the patio furniture in.

Sounds like this is not you: Otherwise, you'd have left the patio furniture out, and wheeled out a kitchen full of dishes!

Tropical storms everywhere in the world tend to track east to west, and then turn north at some point.

Yes, but is then expected to quickly revert to a "minor" hurricane and tropical storm.

Still going to be packing and deploying hours of at least tropical storm force if not "regular"/"minor" hurricane force winds when it enters the island chain, a whole bunch of rain and lots of pounding surf and storm surge.

And a whole lot of muggy.
