We intend to maintain residency in our Berkeley home, so that won't work. The dealbreaker for us is not being able to enjoy the outdoors of Maui. That's the whole point of being there. We would follow all of the social distancing rules to the letter, and we would rely entirely on deliveries for groceries and prepared food.

It’s sort of a dumb rule if you ask me. Speaking with clients that own condos, they are switching from vacation rentals to long term and the demand is still high. That’s a huge change in profit for them. Much lower and possibly even in negative territory for them.

Maui wants to return to to the past, but that will take a decade at minimum to rebuild the pineapple and sugar cane fields.

My understanding is that at Wailea Beach Villas, the condos (super-duper nice, but actually cheaper than staying at nearby hotels) are almost all rentals. Only a handful of owners make them their primary residence. I would imagine some of these folks are getting perilously close to defaulting on their mortgages.

Entrance? I don't believe anyone who is legally permitted to travel is prohibited from entering Hawaii. There is a quarantine when you get here, however. Sorry if I'm misunderstanding what you wrote.

HI can't deny "entry". It is a state not a country. What it can do is impose a quarantine requirement and that is what it has done.

I'm sure people would rather "quarantine" in a condo as a "new resident" than as a tourist under the watchful eye of hotel staff and be confined to their rooms for 2 weeks.

One article recently said the “intended resident” category is going to be removed as an option on the new form that’s coming out soon. So now, when you arrive, you already either live here, or you don’t.

It will interesting to see if/when they differentiate residents from tourists as it relates to the 14-day quarantine. I live here much of the time and own property but still maintain my driver's license in my mainland state. Wondering if proof of property ownership would do? I imagine this stuff is still largely in the works and only time will tell.

I still think the governor is over-estimating the amount of tourist traffic once the quarantine is lifted. I arrived 3 days prior to the quarantine expecting to be accompanied by others trying to sneak in under the wire..... wow, was I wrong. The plane had 14 people on it.

Yes I don’t imagine they could legally “deport” someone simply for lacking a return ticket, unless they showed other signs of being unwilling or unable to properly quarantine.
