Best Places to Eat in Hawaii

The 35th Annual Hale Aina Awards were announced, and there is a restaurant for everybody, on all islands:

35th Annual Hale ?Aina Award Winners: The Best Restaurants in Hawai?i - Honolulu Magazine - September 2018 - Hawaii

It is a popularity contest, so some of the results are a bit surprising (like Pig and the Lady as best Oahu restaurant or Arancino as best Italian!). Well, we all have our favorites, so like local and national elections, if you don't vote, don't complain!

I ate at Pig and the Lady just last week. It was great but not sure I would class it as the best restaurant on Oahu. Not by a long shot.

If there were, I would probably pick Waiola Store on Oahu.

Matsumoto's, been going there since the 60's when my mom would reward me after my haircut across the street at the barbershop, which is now Aoki's.

Senia is now one of the best on the Island. Chef's are classically trained, one a local boy. They worked at Per Se in New York under chef Thomas Keller of French Laundry fame.

Maui Tacos (short order Mexican-Hawaiian fusion) is one of our favorites.

Not exactly on the Maui Tacos price scale ...

We don't get over to the West side that often but we did yesterday.

Went to Frida's Beach House in Lahaina yesterday. We really like the high end margaritas and pretty much all the food. Plus a great view, and yesterday was a picture perfect day there.

Our friends ordered appetizers for their meals: Ceviche, goat cheese quesadilla and guac and chips platter .. all really good.
Yanisa ordered the fish, and I had the tiger prawns, both really good. We also had oyster shooters, which are also good.

How seriously should I take these awards? There are some decent selections, and then I also see Ruth's Chris Steakhouse as the best steak in the islands...

The awards reflect the predilections of the voting public, namely residents of Hawaii who have their favorites. I'm not a beef eater, but whenever I go to Ruth Chris' it is always packed. It has been in business forever (also true for Hy's).

There are some headscratchers: Arancino for Best Italian? Sorry, it has a crazy blend of Italian/Japanese fusion food, served with an awful view looking out on the entrance to the Kahala Hotel. That it received any votes at all for Best Italian indicates the sorry state of affairs in finding good Italian food in Hawaii. On the bright side, one can now find good pizza here. When I moved here in the 1970s, it could not be found.
