I didn't know that. May have to check them out next time I'm in Honolulu.

We have a place down that way. We mosied in while out on a walk one day last April and they were having a birthday party for one of the dolphins. I sang happy birthday to a dolphin. She smiled at me.

You can just stand around right at the edge of the pond and just watch them. The staff are amazing at answering questions. And of course they have the obligatory ‘swim with the dolphins’ experience.

Plate lunches rock! We lived in Hawaii for several years. If you ask mrs pbiflyer what she misses most....plate lunches.

Me? Malasadas (Portugese donuts) from Leonards.

Slightly OT, but I prefer the malasadas at Pipeline Bakery in Kaimuki to Leonards.

Oh no! Now the Kaimuki sidewalks are going to be impassable. Please recant before it is too late.

In fairness and only that reason, I will happily taste test the ones at Pipeline bakery for comparison.

Seriously, my first time at Leonard's was 30 years ago. And even though I had them a few years ago, I am sure times have changed and places have risen.

I looked for my favorite hole in the wall plate lunch last time I was there and it was gone.

I've got a few more years on you in lifetime malasada consumption

One of the principals at Pipleline is a former manager of Leonards so the baseline recipe and format is the same, but I feel the Pipeline ones are a bit more artisanal.

Didn't you know that Hawaiii closes down for all of Labor Day Weekend, and then some?

Seriously, must be a Yelp app outage.

Thanks to everyone!
As 747FC suggested I went to Plumeria Beach house at the Kahala hotel for lunch. I doubt there is a better place on earth.
Went to Punchbowl Crater as PBI suggested. Spectacular views and very peaceful environment to meditate.
And as I have never been to Leonards, I don't know if they can beat the Pipeline Bakery.

The funniest part of the 5-hour layover was when I told my Uber driver to take me to the Pipeline Bakery. He swung his head around and asked how in the hell did I know about that place.

Thanks again

Also, the New JAL Hale lounge was off limits for AC members. I was told it was for JAL customers overflow only. YMMV

Thanks for posting an update; sounds like you enjoyed your layover and I'm glad the information you received was helpful.

As for Pipleline Bakery. to all the local kamaaina living on Oahu; my apologies for letting the cat out of the bag.
