Hopping from Honolulu to Kauai, help !!
Flying to honolulu for six days, want to explore Kauai, how to use miles to get there?
Got Avios and AA miles Thanks for your feedback in advance |
use aa.com to check availability. 4500 avios ow. not sure how many for AA. usually these connections can be had for cheap- less than $100. you'll probably want to rent a car for flexibility. otherwise the bus can get you to Hanalei Bay or to Poipu from the airport (changing buses in Lihue). have fun

Avios can not be used for inter-island flights, as neither AA nor AS offers inter-island flights on their own metal. AA miles can be used on HA; aa.com now supports award bookings on HA, so you longer have to pay the $25 telephone-ticketing fee when booking HA award flights with AA miles. AA charges 5,000 miles for an inter-island one-way in Coach on HA. |
re
book far in advance if you plan on using miles for inter-island hop...they have very limited award seats and can be sold out for months, even the paid flights will be sold out for the prime time flights 11am-3pm well ahead of time... go! offered the cheapest flights last time we were there but we like hawaiian airlines better, they both have occasional sales.

We just booked a one way from Kona Hawaii to Honolulu for 5K AA miles on HA. You just search right from the AA website. Unfortunately our tickets have no seat assignment, but it is a short flight.

HA typically shows lots of interisland availability at 7500-8500 miles OW. Not a great use of miles, but one signup and a $79 annual fee would cover two interisland RT tickets with a few miles left over. |
Do consider a cheap paid flight too. At most people's valuations of miles, and at the fares that are usually available for paid flights, a miles redemption is often not considered a very good use of miles for Honolulu to Kauai.

Call HA for a seat, so you don't end up in a middle one.

Be careful with your carry-on weight. The inter-island flights are much stricter than the flights from the mainland. You could easily end up in a scenario where your bag is "fine" for flying TO Hawaii, but you'll end up having to pay for flights AROUND Hawaii (happened to me on my honeymoon a few years ago)

You will want to rent a card when you fly to Isla del Pollo (aka Kauai). Gotta see the Grand Canyon of the Pacific.^
