lost our oahu accomodations, need help options and revising flights

I have 4 coach award tickets on united flying into hnl on 8/31 and out 9/9. We were staying with SIL but she is now moving to the big island. This was supposed to be a cheap trip, so there really isn't room in the budget for paying even a $150/night hotel right now.

We own a timeshare and could exchange in RCI but options are very limited and cost a lot of points for oahu, especially since we ideally need a 1 bedroom with the kids and tney are almost non-existent. DH still really wants to go to Oahu (he's from there) but I would like to see SIL perhaps for a few days at least. But looking at the options and point values in RCI, I'm thinking I'd rather go to kuaui where we can get a 2 bedroom for cheaper, and maybe SIL will come visit us.

How can I work with my flights to increase options? I have a little united points left, lots of delta, and a good amount of sapphire ultimate reward points. I've read that some airlines will let you fly in and out of different islands, is that an open jaw? Can I change my flight for free at this point to do this? I thought I had to keep the same departure/arrival cities for any changes.

We're also open to changing dates, but only have until the end of Nov to complete travel within the one year timeframe.

Ideas anyone? :)

You would do well to get an opinion from the United flyers over at that forum. 4 award tickets seems like a nice score. You didn't mention your departure airport, which could make a huge difference in a response.

Wow--if your husband *really* wants to go to Oahu, (and it's always nice to go home), work from there.

Can you stay on the Big Island with SIL?
If you can trade RCI on Kauai, what about Big Island? A place like Paniolo Greens has King/Twins/Sleeper sofa. And Volcano Park is a nice bonus.

Other thought would be some creative financing. A 0% credit card for hotel, which would require minimal payments until, say, you get a tax refund and pay it off. Maybe some other *found money* outside of the budget.
