"affordable" rental car at HNL with kids?

Is there a significant discount getting a rental off-site as opposed to the airport? How does this work with kids, carseats, and shuttles? We'll have our car seat already with us.

Anyone done honolulu with kids and recommend a strategy for getting a rental car? Any particular company or location recommended for this situation?

The "discount" is usually due to reduced fees and taxes, not necessarily from the rental agency. Price out a car and determine which fees/taxes are related to the airport to get an idea of the extra cost associated with renting at the airport.

I usually find the best rates with either http://www.discounthawaiicarrental.com or Priceline.

Check out the rates today...found Dollar website has a city special for HNL right now. $134.99 for fullsize car vs. rates of $275 on other vendors (not including $90-$100 in taxes and fees)..

I don't know your plans, so maybe this doesn't apply. Are you sure you need a rental? If staying in Waikiki, you don't need one to get around, plus you'll likely have to pay for parking. If you want to get out of Waikiki for a day trip, you might want to consider renting for one day only.

Concur that is a great week rate for HNL.. The lowest full size quote I got was $226 all in at Alamo.. Well, I guess your rate is before taxes and fees, so its about the same.
