HA checked baggage charge on code-share

I flew SEA-HNL-ITO. Ticket was booked on NW website, all flight numbers were NW, but the HNL-ITO-HNL flights were code-share operated by HA.

I'm Skyteam Platinum. On the outbound, no charge for my checked bags.

On the return, HA told me there was a $20 charge per checked bag.

??? I was lucky. My daughter was with me (not flying), so she just took the two bags back home with her. But this made me realize how complicated the whole 'checked bag charge' thing can be. To be honest, I've never paid too much attention to code-share arrangements as long as my FF# was entered and credited correctly. Now I'm going to have to pay attention to the operating carrier's rules.

The accepting/operating carrier on your inbound to ITO was NW for your NW-operated flight, and on your return, the accepting carrier was HA where SkyTeam status doesn't give you squat.

The accepting/operating carrier is the one who makes the baggage charges and the rules with which you must follow.

I just flew ITO-HNL-SEA-HNL-ITO a couple of weeks ago. The charge was $15 per checked bag, not $20.

I am Delta Gold, I just flew today on AS (DCA - LAX), a Delta-codeshared flight, as I have often done, and they charged me $15 for a bag, for the first time.

I called Alaska to inquire and they said there is no baggage agreement with Delta and SkyMiles status doesn't get you any free bags on Alaska.

Last week we started our flight home from Hawaii on a US Airways codeshare operated by Hawaii, going from HNL to OGG, where we connected to US Airways flights OGG-PHX-EWR. We had 3 bags and were charged a total of $55. The rationale was that we were flying to the mainland, even though we were on US tickets and they were transporting the bags to the mainland. We had paid no baggage fees to US on the flights to HNL because I am Silver Preferred.

When we checked in, the HA agent gave us the option of checking in only to OGG, in which case he would have charged us $15 for 1 extra bag (1 is free on inter-island flights). We then would have to retrieve the bags and check in a 2nd time with US in Maui. We elected to pay the $55 fee.

It seems like HA is making a lot of extra money on codeshare baggage fees.
