HA Pualani Platinum Upgrade Certificates Question

Hi Guys,

I have hit HA Pualani Platinum status a few months ago and have received the two first class/business upgrade certificates.

On their website, it says;
  • Platinum
    2018 Membership Year - Two (2) Complimentary First Class One-way upgrades between Hawaii & North America
    2019 Membership Year - Two (2) Complimentary First/Business Class One-way upgrades
    *One (1) certificate good for one-way upgrade to First Class - between Hawaii & North American destinations we serve (excluding JFK)
    *Two (2) certificates are good for one-way upgrade to First/Business Class - between Hawaii & JFK or an International destination we serve
I have a booking in October this year from HNL - AKL (Auckland, New Zealand) which I want to potentially use my 2 upgrade certificates together to upgrade to lie-flat business class.

However, just reading the above, as this is the 2018 membership year, it seems I cannot combine 2 to upgrade one-way between Hawaii and an "international destination"? I can only use the two that I have got separately ONLY between Hawaii and North America...? They make it sound like we can only combine 2 certificates to upgrade to international destinations only with certificates gotten from the 2019 year.

Can someone please clarify if this is the case...? I've rung their elite line and a lot of their staff seem confused and most just say it will be fine... but I am skeptical. I don't want to book HA if I don't have any chance of using my upgrade certificates.
