LAX/OGG with stopover
 

Hi. We have a HA flight that leaves from LAX and has a stopover in HNL before continuing on to OGG. We will land in HNL at 9:55am and depart at 11:04 to our final destination. Will this give us enough time to get from one flight to the other? Also will they check our bags all the way though or will we have to get them at HNL and pay again to check them to OGG? Last question, I am not familiar with the layout of HNL at all so for these 2 flights will we stay in a secured area or have to be re screened? I looked at the terminal map online and couldn't figure out exactly where we would be lol.

Assuming that you are on two HA flights, they will transport your baggage between flights for you. No need to reclaim them. If you are not on two HA flights, you will need to check your luggage tags when they are printed. If they don't say OGG on them, you will have to get them in HNL and transport them.

If your bags are sent through to OGG, you will not need to leave the secure area. Just follow the signs to the Interisland terminal. Whatever you do: Don't pass by TSA and head out of the secure area to the street! (note that you will pass by an agricultural screening station that scans the handcarry of passengers going from the interisland terminal to the International terminal.)

I'm quite surprised that you have such a short layover: Are both flights on the same PNR? If not, that can cause problems unless both flights are HA booked. If they are both HA flights (and purchased through HA), no problems if you arrive late. There are many flights a day from HNL to OGG, and you will find seats on another one.

You will go from one of the green terminal building to one of the dark blue terminal buildings, transiting via the light blue pathway. All of this is airside!

Thank you so much for the info! And yes both flights are connecting and booked as one reservation through HA. We picked our seats for both when we made the ressie online: I can't figure out how to post a pic of the flight from the website but below is the copied info regarding the flights on Sunday, June 3rd. It does appear the 2nd leg of the flight from HNL-OGG has changed from 11:04am to 11:13am so I guess that gives us a few more minutes to get to the plane lol!

If you are on time, this is very do-able. Inter-island flight don't start boarding until about 20 minutes or so before the flight. So, you will want to get off your inbound plane fast (hopefully you are seated toward the front of the plane), and get the gate at which your OGG-bound departs. Assuming you have a boarding pass, no need to checkin at any counter--just be ready to hand your BPs to the gate agent when they call your boarding group.

Note: study the map I provided, because if your gates are in the 49-53 sector, you want to go directly there, not into the larger part of the Interisland terminal, where gate 54-61 are located.(tip: If you see moving pathways, you are headed to gates 54-61!)

Thank you so much! Yes I am a planner and definitely like to know as much as possible ahead of time to cut down on confusion later. This is our first time to Hawaii and using HA so I just have a lot of questions and want to make sure I am prepared as possible when the time comes. We are mid plane for the first flight but I think as long as we know where we are going beforehand we should be able to bob and weave our way around to get to our next gate lol! Mahalo!!

If, for some reason, you are late. HA has many flights from HNL to OGG. So, they will rebook you on one of the later flights. No worries!

Since my issue is similar, I didn't want to start a new thread. My concern is about going OGG-HNL-LAX.

Flight 185 OGG-HNL arrives at HNL at 1:19 pm, and flight HA2 HNL-LAX leaves at 2:40 pm. My companion often has back issues so may be slower walking from gate to gate. Is the approximately 1 hour 30 minute layover plenty of time? We're going first class and I definitely don't want to miss our HNL- LAX flight since we have the lie-flat seats.

You have plenty of time. These interisland flights are rarely delayed and HA has the country's best on-time record because of it. However, there are occasions when they have to pull a plane due to mechanical reasons, and when this happens, all heck breaks loose. I would not anticipate that.

If walking is a problem, make advance arrangements for a wheel chair escort. Otherwise, have a leisurely airside stroll to the international terminal.

I agree with this advice. Definitely call HA and reserve a wheelchair for a 70 minute connection. In the future, if at all possible, just ask HA to book you on an earlier HA interisland flight.
When there are mobility issues, I really like to leave a little extra time in the schedule (a 2 hour connection would be idea in my opinion).

I just checked again, and my flight times changed, giving me even less time to go from one terminal to the next-- so I called HA and was told to call the re-accommodation desk to get an earlier interisland flight. There are several available, so I'm hoping it won't be an issue and I won't need to pay more.

let us know what they said! I am interested to hear if they allowed you to change your interisland flight without charging a change fee :)

I decided to wait until it's a little closer in just in case the flight schedule changes again. If a change fee is required, I don't want to have to pay it and then have them change the schedule a second time to a longer layover. I did that with Delta once and paid $250 to change flights, and the very next day the schedule changed to something workable. Ugh. Of course they didn't return my money.

I wanted to update my last post. I checked the flight times today, and this time the outgoing HNL-LAX fight time moved up, so we would have 73 minutes to make the flight. I wasn't sure if this was within the MCT, and either way, I was concerned that this would be tight due to mobility issues, since flights to the mainland on HA load up early. I went to the website and chose some alternative flights before calling. Then I called HA to discuss making a change, realizing I might have to pay a change fee. The very pleasant customer service agent contacted the re-accommodation desk on my behalf and they were willing to change the OGG-HNL leg to an earlier flight with no charge. It was emphasized that this was a one-time courtesy, for which I am very grateful. I've always been a happy HA customer, and this is just one example of why I stay loyal to them. I don't have status, so it was really exceptional customer service for them to accommodate me as they did.

By the way, she told me that the 73 minutes was within the minimum connection time-frame. I thought it was 75, but it's actually 65 minutes. Nonetheless, now we will be able to meander around the airport and buy more goodies to take home.

I didn't see anyone else mention it, but at HNL there is a shuttle located on the 3rd floor of the interisland terminal that will take you to the mainland gates.
