Hawaiian and Japan Airlines sign joint-venture agreement

Now, this is interesting -- especially since Delta tried and failed for years to acquire a Japanese airline or at least sign a joint-venture agrreement.

From the Hawaiian press release:

The agreement between Hawaiian Airlines and Japan Airlines, signed at a ceremony in Tokyo, takes effect March 25, 2018 (subject to government approval). The agreement provides for extensive code sharing, lounge access and frequent flyer program reciprocity.

In the near-term:

- JAL guests will have unlimited access to Hawaiian's vast neighbor island and Japan-Hawai'i network, including non-stop flights between Sapporo and Honolulu.
- Hawaiian Airlines will have full access to JAL's domestic network, which includes Nagoya, Fukuoka, Sendai and Aomori.
- Hawaiian's Japan-to-Hawai'i flights will be offered as new options within Japan Airlines' wholly owned subsidiary, JALPAK, a high reputable package tour operator in Japan.
- JAL Mileage Bank and HawaiianMiles members will be able to earn miles on the codeshare flights. Further opportunities for accrual and redemption of mileage will be expanded at a later date.
- Guests will have access to both airlines' lounges, and when Hawaiian has completed its planned relocation to Terminal 2 at Tokyo Narita Airport, guests of each airline will be able to seamlessly transfer between each carrier's networks.

From The Japan Times:

The agreement is the latest in the string of partnerships JAL has announced since investment and route-expansion restrictions linked to its 2010 government bailout expired in March. Since then, it has announced code-sharing agreements with Vietnamese budget carrier Vietjet Air and India’s Vistara, which is part of the Tata group. It also began nonstop flights from Tokyo to Melbourne, Australia, and this month added services between Narita Airport and Kona, Hawaii.

...

Hawaiian Airlines, the U.S. state’s leading carrier, had been in alliance with JAL’s rival and Japan’s largest airline, All Nippon Airways, since 2012. A spokesman for ANA said that their code-sharing deal will be terminated next March, around when the partnership between Hawaiian and JAL takes effect.

Very interesting! Will watch and hope that this will be more substantive and better-implemented than their current partnerships.

As a UA/*A person and elite who occasionally flies HA for certain routes, price, availability and such, not too thrilled about this. Would have much rather seen them expand the partnership with NH, which I'm assuming they will drop now with the JAL partnership taking place.

Japan Times indicates that NH is indeed being dropped.
