Question Hawaiian Air Miles for me, Paid ticket for husband, 50% off companion fare for son?

I have 50k HawaiianMiles and the 50% companion fare discount. I'd like to travel from LAX-HNL with my husband and son. Can I use miles for my ticket, pay for my husband's ticket in full, and use the 50% discount companion fare towards my son's ticket? Using the HA cc of course. I am the primary cardholder and my husband does not have the card.

Can I do this? Or does the paid fare have to be for MY ticket? I realize I could transfer the miles to my husband's account, but since he does not have the cc, it would cost lots of $$$.

Thanks in advance for any insight and suggestions!

I don't know the answer to that offhand, but it's certainly possible to buy your husband's ticket with your miles and yours and son's with cash and companion fare, so one way or another you can do what you seem to be trying to do.

This. Then call to have the two reservations linked.

From the terms and conditions for the companion fare: "Primary cardholder and companion must be on the same flight record, fare and class of service and must travel on all flight segments together." So no, you can't use companion fare to buy tickets for others, leaving the path suggested above as your best bet.

We just did this last night. It was very easy and did it all online. Started with the free ticket from my miles. Used that for my son. Then immediately booked myself and my wife on the same flight, paid full for me and 50% off for her. Did keep an eye on availability of seats before I finalized my son's ticket. I may have called reservations if seats look limited and I was worried he may end up going to Hawaii without me! But it was very easy to do. BTW our route was SJC to OGG in October. Lots of availability at 35000 miles round trip.
