HA returns to JHM (West Maui)

I'm seeing flights from HNL or JHM loaded for Jan 14th 2017 on An ATR 42 loaded

The fleet page now lists west Maui

Meh. I know this is FT, and I do like flying, but I would so much rather have a ferry to get around the state.

Both HNL and OGG to JHM

This is great news for those who live and work on that side of Maui. ^ to Hawaiian for bringing back the service... but I thought the ATRs couldn't land on the JHM runway without a runway expansion?

Good catch. The ATRs need a longer runway than exists at JHM:

Perhaps they got a waiver based upon a weight restriction?

On a side-note, the DHC-8 also needs greater than 3000 feet, but I recall that landing at JHM. Perhaps I'm confusing it with the DHC-6?

Some runway work had to be undertaken in the form of installing PAPI's, which are those 4 lights at the end of the runway that tell pilots when they are too high, low or on glidepath. Then they had to wait for the FAA to come out and test/certify them. As far as the planes go, Ohana operates the smaller ATR 42 as compared to Island Air's ATR 72. From what I understand, some flap modification also had to be done in order to facilitate this.

Yes, it's great to see HA back at the airport it built. Full circle indeed.

Thanks for the explanation. When WP flew to JHM, it was operating Dash-8s, so I don't think those were a problem, other than the fact that take-offs were fun because engines would spool up to take-off speed with breaks applied.

Yes!! This great news.... Faster to the fun and relaxation it will be when we return to our fun spot in Lahaina...

who will be flying between ogg and jhm? Connections?

Certainly not locals. By the time you deal with the airport etc, it's faster to just drive. 1:15 estimate right now according to google maps with some traffic on the West side.

And if you're going to be in Maui for any length of time and are renting a car, the rates from the OGG area are usually much less.

The 40 minute scheduled flight time (probably 10 min in actuality)and $79 fee makes it a good bet for some...

It appears the JHM-OGG and OGG-JHM flights have to do with the aircraft routing during the day. More about logistics than capturing passengers. But... any ticket sales are always a bonus.

Looks like the JHM flying is facilitated by stopping the OGG-ITO-OGG flying operated by Ohana.

>tfw trying to book this flight and search over and over again with no availability
>realize it's delayed until March 2017 and now you have to book Mokulele again
