I’m not exactly sure why you felt like you needed to go on and on about the whole process of pending charges. Plus, I never said there was a problem but apparently you assumed that there was.

My point was simply to let people know what happened in my experience. Especially considering the terms and conditions explicitly state something completely different. Both the FAQ and the bid declined email state that your card ONLY gets charged if you win a bid. Considering it also mentions a temp hold charge to ensure card validity being made when you initially make the bid offer; I don’t see why they don’t disclose that they will also make one as a system prepares to evaluate the bids that have been received.

Thus, considering the whole point of this thread is to give data points on what got accepted and what didn’t as well as what the experience was- I added that into my post. Not everyone’s credit card company drops pending charges in 24 hours – that charge is actually still pending and still tying up funds on my American Express as I type this. So I added it because it occurred and it may help someone else in the future to know that that is a possibility if they didn’t already or weren’t expecting it.

At the end of the day it’s the internet, it’s a free country, and we can both voice our opinions and hopefully continue to be respectful while doing so; not that I expect that this conversation really needs to continue.

I'm not a mindreader in real life, but it certainly looks like you did see a problem and were on a rant. It is great to have data point, but...

Sort of a data point. I flew PPG-HNL last weekend. When I bought the ticket for work, the business class fare was $500 more than the base economy fare. So I upfared within 24 hours to it to try out the lie flat on an overnight flight. When the bid up window opened the minimum bid was $700. So I felt good about that choice - not sure how sensitive the bid system is to demand. But thought I'd share. The two cocktails as we were on the ground worked well to knock me out for the flight back to Hawaii....

Put in bids for next week's flights...

SMF-HNL bid the minimum as of now $295, at least 7 seats available for sale, might go back and go $5 over the min
OGG-SMF bid $5 over the minimum @ $250, 5 seats currently available for sale

Will update if successful/not. Flights were booked on miles/awards in coach lowest level @ 40k each round trip.

We have flights next week from SEA to OGG and bidding on the seats to upgrade. The low bid is $300 each so thinking about going $50 over and will let you know what happens.

SMF-HNL, I increased the bid to $300pp at T-60 and the upgrade cleared at T-47 for two passengers
OGG-SMF, I withdrew the upgrade request before it came to the clearance window and we flew in row 19

Has anyone experience in linking two people with separate PNRs so that both are upgraded or not?

Thanks.

two data points in Nov 2020:

LAX-HNL Wednesday Departure - successful first class bid at $305. Lowest bid available was $275. At the time they sent the reminder e-mail that they were "reviewing all bids" it showed 2 seats available

HNL-LAX Monday Departure - successful first class bid at $305. Lowest bid available was $275. As they were "reviewing all bids" there were 4 seats available.

Bid up with separate reservations

I have a trip to Kona later this week with my GF. I received a bid up offer to upgrade to First Class on the HNL-SEA return flight. I know that bid up applies to everyone on the same reservation. However, I had to book our flights as two separate reservations because I used a prior credit to book my ticket. I'm considering bidding the same amount for both reservations. My questions are, what are the changes that only one reservation gets the upgrade? Could I refuse the upgrade in the even that only one of us gets upgrade(I understand that there's no refund)? Thanks

With the recent uptick in Hawaii travel, wondering if these past reports of mid $300's are still in the ballpark of successful bids.
Lowest possible bid for HNL-LAX 2 weeks out is $285, and the 'chance-o-meter' doesn't flip from poor (<$350) to fair to GOOD until you get to $435.
There's 3 seats at $900 ea and 6 of 12 seats open in the seat map (which I know does not mean how many rev seats are available).
$435 seems high. I would use miles if I paid that much but if I hold off on using miles and bid unsuccessfully, then the mile seats may be gone.
Any advice appreciated.

As a UA1K I'm curious about what the appeal of Hawaiian was as you'd certainly get a complimentary upgrade on the 777 red eye and a decent chance on the 757 flights and they tend to max buyups at $350.

Regardless - $435 seems really high as it is certainly tolerable in Extra Comfort.

Yes, if the UA flight was an option I would do that.
I almost never pay for upgrades but this is an exception. I may just bid $300 and see how it goes, as the HA miles upgrade is 50K each- ouch
