I've had two of them. I've had a yellow one for six years and a blue one for four years before that. I like them because they look unlike anything else on the road. Not the most comfortable ride though.

Does anyone remember the TV series Metrosexuality? Had the gayest pink Wrangler complete with fluffy pink seat covers... maybe it started there... masculine but with a hint of style

I have a Jeep, but it's a Cherokee instead of a Wrangler. Aside from the cost of fuel -- even when it was cheaper -- I always thought a Hummer H1 (not the newer ones) would be fun but I didn't want to spend that much.

And here I thought it was because in high school, Bill B, the hottest guy in the class before me drove a cherry red one. He had a sexy southern twang, and always sat with his legs spread apart for some reason.

Mmm.

memories....

Like most things in gay culture, I chalk it up to arrested development.

50% of the cars I've owned are/were two seat roadsters, 25% four door and 25% SUV/crossover (out of 4 cars total though). I think I will always have a convertible. It's a lot more fun when the weather's nice.

Wow, the Car Talk page has me pegged. I've owned two Golfs and one Jetta. Since then I've wised up and do Zipcars.

mmmmm

Jeep wins everytime for me.

Drive a Cherokee - but the wrangler is a good look.
I like the fact that in Australia, the Jeep is sort of in the upmarket category but still is functional, and with our city driving the higher visibility is always good.

Jetta's are good - and the new Audi's are hot.

I agree that a str8 guy looks butch in a Wrangler but gay guys seem to look gayer. Just my 2 cents. I do think they are great looking cars, great pieces of machinery, and fun and cool. The big reason I shied away from them when buying a used car last summer was the gas mileage.

Here in FVX - Farmville, VA - (that's not a joke), we need 4x4's for the farm. They did pave our road a year or two ago but the first 20 minutes of my drive to IAD (2 hours 45 minutes) are still mostly on dirt roads.

We HAD 4 jeeps (1 Wrangler and 3 Cherokees) on the farm until recently. The Wrangler was sold when one brother moved to Alaska and I gave my 200,000 miler Cherokee to my sister who recently moved near the farm and needed a 4x4 because of the rain, snow, mud, etc. (Her lil' Miata is no good in snow or so she says.)

I am embarrassed to say that I bought a Jetta because I had driven a friend's across the country and really liked it. PLUS I get 30 miles to the gallon. That was the deal clincher. It helps when driving to IAD and back. I really was surprised the Jetta was #1 on the "gay" list. Most of the Jetta owners I know are str8. (I think!) (Not counting the Jetta driver in PSP I dated for a bit. )

Does it help that my Jetta is covered in dust and mud, has a beat-up cowboy hat on the rear window ledge and doesn't have hubcaps? (The hubcaps fly off since I drive too fast on those dirt roads! )

If I could have bought any new car, though, it would have been an Audi. The A-6. *sigh*

I am recalling more than one or two (Falcon maybe) gay porn films in the 80s using the Jeep in all kinds of very interesting ways - especially the roll bar.

I live in the south on the coast, I can tell you for one that I am confident that I am not gay, not a phase, no. I drive a 13 Wrangler Rubicon 2 door JK with a 3” lift and 35” tires. I think jeeps are really only a “gay symbol” depending on where you live. All the jeeps you see near me are coated with mud and are jacked up sky high or have no flares and are rock crawlers.

Interesting that this thread has been resuscitated.

Times might have changed. Jeeps might have been popular with gays but I would not go as far as calling it an "ICON".
An icon is something that is instantly recognizable and is representative of something.
I see a Jeep I don't immediately link it to gay.

I have lived in the epicenter of gay life in both San Diego (Hillcrest) and Los Angeles (West Hollywood) for the last two decades and Jeep Wranglers are not a thing here that I have noticed.
I have one friend that used to have one in the late 90s/early 2000s but nowadays he drives something else.

At least based on my experience in SD and LA, I think the BMW's 3 series are more popular with the gays around here.
It seemed to me me that every new gay guy in town in his 20s or 30s goes and gets a BMW.
But again, that might be a false perception; now that I think about it, my gay friends have all sorts of brands (from Hyundai to MB) and shapes (from compacts to SUVs).

I think there is definitely more gay icons in music.
Ask any of my friends in their 40s / 50s they all adore Madonna.
My friends now in their 30s/40s...Gaga.
My friends now in their 20s...who knows! It changes every year.
Kardi B, Lizzo, now Megan the Stallion...they don't have an everlasting presence anymore.

FWIW, the car brand of choice for lesbians is Subaru (though our two lesbian neighbours don't have one). Apparently the result of a deliberate ad campaign. As for Jeeps. it may be a U.S. thing.
