I second all that people say on here. The DIA - Detroit Institure of the Arts is FANTASTIC.
I recommend the Henry Ford as well.
a TREMENDOUS bbq restaurant in Detroit - downtown almost - is Slow's. go there - it's cheap and delicious.
I'd recommend going to dearborn for fantastic Middle Eastern/ Lebanese food.
the town of Chelsea, which is about an hour outside of Detroit has an amazing restaurant - the Common Grill.
for gay life, go to aut bar in Ann Arbor, Necto on Friday in Ann Arbor, or hit up the aforementioned places in Royal Oak - Pronto is great.
