Grindr blocked, Tinder not 🤬

Three out of four hotels in the last few weeks have blocked Grindr but when I’ve checked Tinder it’s all fine and dandy. The reasons given on the web page vary in verbiage but amount to “not family friendly” or “porn”. Hotels we’re in the UK, the US and Austria. This is a pattern I’ve seen since I came out four years ago (bi cis male, in case you’re wondering).

I’m tired of getting angry about this but not being able to change anything. Any ideas?

I’m probably going to end up getting one, but it rather sidesteps the issue that a gay dating app is considered dirty or pornographic while straight ones are not. I guess I naively hoped I could change something… 😕

Wait, Grindr is a "dating app"? I learn something new every day!

😂😂😂 good point. Can't really argue that the normies on Tinder are all there to find a wholesome forever love either though.

Doesn't Grindr have ads that could be considered pornographic?
And does Grindr allow explicit pictures in profiles?
I don't think hotels in the UK give a damn about a hook up website being gay.
Sometimes the algorithms are not perfect and there might be other reasons of the app being blocked.

Interesting that you also have Tinder and other "straight" apps just to check whether they are blocked or not.

Profiles pics have to be approved before posting and I haven't seen any that are pornographic. Users can DM explicit photos to one another but that's true of pretty much any dating app by the sounds of it.

The UK hotel was a pub/hotel in the Greene King chain.

And yes, I literally downloaded Tinder to see if that was also blocked.

Wonder why a hotel would even care what sites you went on. I've gotten on porn sites before on hotels with no issues.

And I don't think I've ever seen an app blocked on a phone even when there is a block on porn sites on a wifi network.

Why not just turn the wifi off when you want to get on Grindr and use your phone data instead?

Sure, there’s ways round it, but I’m talking about how an app for straight people to hook up isn’t blocked but and equivalent one for gay men is. I mean, aren’t there laws against discriminating based on a person’s sexuality. I’m by no means an activist or anything but this just keeps itching at my brain.

I've never seen a app blocked before but is it like a webpage that is blocked that has a message saying its content it blocked and usually has a phone number. You could try going that route but the only thing that will probably happen is Tinder gets blocked instead. Could complain to the hotel but it's probably their providers doing. Not sure why a hotel would block any sites anyway, if it's because of kids it's the parents responsibility to put put the apporpriate blocking software on the device.

Just curious if this hotel still has pay per view and if it does if there is porn available? Every hotel I've stayed at that has on demand has porn available to purchase.

On a side note, I was recently in the Maldives and Grindr was working. This was at a luxury resort (the kind with over the water villas).

However, the screenshot feature is disabled (any screenshots you attempt to make of other user's profiles while in the app return with a black image) and the location/distance setting is also disabled.

After coming back to North America, the screenshot and location/distance settings started working again.

I am late to this party but may I advise anyone who comes across this in the UK to complain like fury as it is blatantly illegal. The way things are going in the UK, particularly England, at the moment we need to be mega-assertive about protecting our rights!

I never thought this would be possible but I will do a bit of checking whenever I am in a UK hotel (though being happily married I would not normally be looking at Tinder or Grindr )

I have an anonymous account on Grindr because I think it's fun to turn it on in an airline lounge or restaurant just to see who's nearby. I've been in SkyClubs and it'll say there are 3 or 4 guys within 300 feet of me. Helps make passing the time fun.
