Costa Rica legalizes same-sex marriage
 

It'll be official on May 26. Costa Rica will become the first country in Central America to embrace marriage equality. That makes it a new choice for a destination wedding ... but not at the moment. All ports of entry are closed and will be until at least mid-June. Manuel Antonio on the central Pacific coast is the most gay-friendly destination in the country, so I'd expect some of the hotels there to go after this new market. Many already work with wedding planners

"Embrace" is a big word. The Costa Rica Supreme Court ruled back in November 2018 that the legislature had 18 months to come up with a new law otherwise same-sex marriage would automatically become legal.
Nothing happened and as a result, May 26 marriage equality is the default outcome.

Perhaps. I'm going to stand by my use of the word "embrace." President Carlos Alvarado championed a cause that has been languishing since 2008. I think it took a fortunate series of events (the 2018 ruling by the Inter American Court of Human Rights, Alvarado's 2018 election against a vehemently anti-gay president, also named Alvarado, who ran on that as his only issue, and Costa Rica's own Supreme Court ruling) to make this happen. No. The Asamblea Legislativa didn't do its part. The important thing is that it will take effect on Tuesday.

Who said it wouldn't matter? I'm saying Americans, Canadians, citizens of most W European countries and a few S American countries, Australians, New Zealanders, South Africans, (I'm forgetting a few places) will have Costa Rica as a new choice for a destination wedding ... when it opens up to international tourism again.
