Long Layover in FRA
Any ideas for best options on my 9 hour layover in FRA next week? BTW, Going out of security means the not fun re-entering the FRA security.

Are you *G or in C/F? IME FRA security isn't always that bad, I've gone out and back in and literally walked right up to the xray. 9 hours is a long time, the SEN lounges are nice (well compared to RCCs they're a freaking gem) but 9 hours, no thanks. Go into town grab a beer and some decent food, even if you give yourself 2 hours to re-clear security and customers you can have a nice afternoon in FRA

I would definitely take the S Bachn into town, maybe to Konstablerwache and check out the Zeil, etc. Even with going into town, 9 hours is a loooong time in FRA.

Welcome to FlyerTalk!
I'd suggest you take a look at our Germany (Travel) Forum, which contains information such as: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/germa...t-what-do.html. My experience in clearing security in FRA in February was about a five minute wait to get through passport control and the metal detectors and a shorter wait to clear gate security. just take the S-Bahn to Hauptwache and take a stroll over the shopping-mile "Zeil" and make sure to take a look at the "Römer"square, which is surrounded by historical buildings, nice cafes and restaurants.
If you love good steaks, take a cab (5 min) to the steakhaus "surf & turf" in the "Grünburger Weg". Delicious steaks in all variations ^ |
If you take the s-bahn into town go to the Romer square for Frankfurt Walks at 10:30am daily. It costs 10euro and you don't need reservations. It lasts about 3 hours and you learn the history of the buildings. The guide stands out near the tourist office with her brochures so you"ll recognize her or him.
You can find on the internet. I did it 2 weeks ago and it made the day in Frankfurt. |
I'd recommend taking the ICE to Cologne (from FRA train station to Cologne Hauptbahnhof), which is a bit pricy at 60Euros each way for a full-price ticket, which is your only option if you're not buying an advance ticket. But it's only an hour, and in Cologne you can visit the famous Cathedral ("Dom") and museum, as well as enjoy the local Kolsch (sp?) beer. This is all within a literal two minutes from the Hauptbahnhof. There's also a nice bridge and river to walk along if it suits you.
Give yourself about 2 to 3 hours to return so that you have the hour-long train back to FRA, then about 5-20 minutes for security. Then spend the rest of the wait at a lounge; if you don't have lounge access you can still enjoy walking in the airport shops. |
Ok. There's this thread and then there's the numerous other long FRA layover threads.
How about suggestions for those staying 24 hours or so? Doing a MR, arriving at 0700 on Saturday, departing 1145 Sunday in late April. I've been to Frankfurt for a day before - happened upon a Carnivale parade, hadn't even realized it was scheduled for that Sunday.. So probably not interested in Frankfurt this time. Definitely interested in Rhine valley via boat and/or train, Mainz sounds interesting, I would even entertain Cologne. Lots of options. What would be the suggested area to get a comfy bed to spend Saturday night? I could then make my choices based upon that. |
