Eagle's Nest visit while in Berchtesgaden

A fews years ago, we stayed at the Berchtesgaden InterContinental resort in southern Germany, and decided to visit the Eagle's Nest. While clearing out my photo album to upgrade my computer, I finally put together a picture report for those interested in visiting this area:

Very interesting. Thanks for sharing! I particularly like the brass elevator in the middle of the mountain -- I didn't know about that.

But you should smile more in the pictures. :)

Some nice pictures.

So what is the correct translation of "Königssee" if it's not "King's Lake?"

König = King
See = Lake

So it is the right translation.

Though why would anyone want to translate a name of a lake in Germany to English:rolleyes:? It's not like Germans call New York Neues York:)

My son found this entry in wikipedia, and told me that I was wrong in thinking that Königssee means King's Lake:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Königssee

...The literal translation appears to be King's Lake, but this is not correct. While König does indeed mean king, the name of the lake comes from the first name Kuno, which appears in several historical sources, and it was formerly called Kunigsee...
Either way, my family and I really enjoyed the area and especially the pristine waters of the Königssee.

Jet2k: Can you remember how long the ride took from the IC to the Eagles Nest.
I will stay at the IC this weekend and your pictures make us want to go there, if wheather is clear.

Thanks in advance :)

lemieux66,

The bus ride itself seems to be about 30 minutes, and from what I recall, runs very often. The station where you catch the bus is very very close to the IC Berchtesgaden, I think it is less than 2-3 minutes by car. Came down from the sloped access road to the IC, and the bus station is just on the other side of the main road within a few hundred feet.

It has been a few years since our visit, so my recollection might not be exact. I am pretty sure we spent most of the day on this visit, getting to the bus station around 10-11, and got to the Eagle's Nest just after noon. I think we took the bus back down around 3:00 or 3:30, and then spent some time at the documentation center before visiting the bunkers that was connected to the documentation center. I seem to remember that the documentation center closes at 5pm, and we were one of the last ones to leave the building.

Enjoy your visit!

We went to the Eagles Nest on the 1st day of opening last season which was around the 10th May on about the 2nd or 3rd Coach from the bus stand near Dokumentation Obersaltzburg.
We got a discount on the trip as we had guest cards from the hotel we were staying in.
It's not a journey for those who do not like heights but the views are amazing.
Because there was still a lot of snow on the mountain we were not able to walk up to the other viewpoint.
It's definately well worth the trip for the good food & the views but be warned that it does get incredibly busy.

Jet2k, Tanja,

Thank you both for your recommodations.

Unfortunatelly we had cloudy wheather today, so we skipped Eagles Nest, and went skiing.
Later that day the sun came out :rolleyes:

We noticed the Eagles Nest trip for our next visit in July though.

Skiing is a great idea that I should add to our activities the next time I am in the area ^ .

The documentation center and bunkers were all that we were able to see on last visit due to a surprise early snow storm. My husband has done the other tour and loved it. The views were great from the teahouse. The bunkers were very interesting and creepy at the same time. The effort and labor that went into them is very amazing.
