True.

My US Passport (book or card) doesn't carry an address either. However, it is certainly valid ID in Germany.

A driver's license may not be officially an ID in Germany, but it may be enough for certain ID check purposes.

The main form of identification as a foreigner in a foreign country is your passport. National IDs or driver licenses are secondary and may be accepted or not as an official form of ID. For example with in the European Union you don't need a passport as an European national to travel.

So while an US driver license might be a good start for identification the official ID you need is your passport.

Very true and correct. In a civilized country like Germany you do not need to expect to be handcuffed or spend a night in custody, however, it can cause inconvenience and nobody should complain about not having been warned.
