If the former, I have to admit I'm surprised at the lack in one of Germany's largest cities, especially one so close to Baden-Württemberg.

Well. on the other hand you can enjoy most Italian culinary regions without ever having to leave Bockenheim. :)

My experience in Germany is that the local restaurants and "Kneipen" with food really only serve regional favourites. You might get a few Bavarian and Swabian speciality places but are more likely to run into a Thai or even Austrian restaurant.

the real question is : Is FRA a typical German city ?
Like would you say NYC is a place to get typical American food... (BTW what is typical US food ? Hamburger, Pizza or Tacos... I am kidding.)
But for FRA it is for sure that you will have it easier to find Italian, Greek or Turkish rather than German... beside maybe some places in Sachsenhausen...
with Apfelwein...:p

NYC and FRA are not that dissimilar. That's why FRA is called "Mainhattan". FRA is as typical of Germany as is NYC. In terms of food you have a multi-ethnic/multikulti cuisine. Both are neither the middle of the country (culturally, not geographically). And as e-frog said, what is typical US food? What is typical German food? It's all regional.:p
