Easter in Munich - What can I expect
 

I will be arriving in Munich on Easter Saturday and departing early Monday morning. I have a few questions related to this.

1. Will stores be open on Saturday?
2. Other than churches, what will be open on Sunday? - Museums, restaurants (all or just specific types - will they have special menus - will I need reservations)
3. Speaking of churches, any recommendations - I like good choral singing and organ music, so the more formal, the better.
4. Will trains be running at 4:30 - 5:00 in the morning so I can get to the airport for my flight to Moscow, or will I have to pre-arrange a taxi.

Any other special advice about Easter in Munich will be welcome.

Stores are open on Saturdays, at least until 5 r 6 pm. Larger business (downtown) are open until 8pm.
Stores are not open on Sundays (maybe a couple of times a year only), but restaurants are.
Bavaria is the most religious (catholic) state in Germany, with the most holidays. They observe Good Friday and the Monday after Easter as well (Ostermontag).

AFAIK, the Frauenkirche does have a choir. Here's the web site (but the calendar only goes until March 20th).

Trains will be running from 2:38 on on the airport line with four trains an hour from 3 am. You might wish to check on www.bahn.de.

Thanks for the info. and the link on the Frauenkirche. If anyone has any more specific info on the openings and closings, it would be appreciated. I assumed that stores would be closed on Easter Sunday, but wasn't sure if it was like Christmas in London, where virtually everything is shut down including trains, museums, many restaurants, etc. Or if restaurants would be open, but if you didn't have a reservation, you wouldn't have a chance at a table.


Doh! I use www.bahn.de all the time. I just had it in my head that the trains from the airport were subway trains (even though they are really S-Bahn) and didn't think about www.bahn.de. Thanks!

Good Friday and Easter Sunday every shop will be closed for certain and I expect several other places to be closed on Good Friday. For Museums and Restaurants you will have to check individually on a case to case basis. There is no general rule. Regarding restaurants I would certainly advise to get a reservation. Easter Sunday is a typical day to go out with the familiy.


I definitely is S-Bahn. However, you can even check other public transport on Bahn.de. Just enter the station name. I believe most of the providers of public transport in Germany use the same search engine and enter their time tables in a shared data base.

Thanks for the additional info Flying Lawyer and all your work on the rail sticky. I use Lufthansa a lot for trips to places other than Germany, and often take a day or two in Germany to break up the trip. This forum has been great in helping me make the most of these short stops.

As an alternative to the S-Bahn I can recommend the Lufthansa Airportbus:

I am not sure if and when it will be running on the easter weekend, but I guess the normal schedule (every 20 min) should apply. You can either board at the Hauptbahnhof (Mainstation) or at München Schwabing Nord (probably your choice if you live in Schwabing, Arabella Sheraton or the Hilton's).
