Steak House in Germany?
 

I'll be in the Bremen Germany area soon enjoying a lot of Beck's beer. But I am wondering is their a German equivalent to high end steakhouse like a Ruth's Chris or a Morton's steak house in the area? I'm anxious to try.

Can't answer the question, Germans IMO tend to do pork much better than beef.

We have a few steak house chains in Germany called Block House or Maredo. I reckon you will find some of those in Bremen but probably won't be what you are looking for, pretty much middle of the line.

However if you ever come to Hamburg, go to the 'Schlachterboerse'. That is the real thing for steak!

They are all over Germany, and sell South American steaks. The food is fairly good and the prices are reasonable.

I would not compare the Maredo chain to Ruth Chris, Mortons, Palm, etc. but more to Outback, Longhorn, Lone Star or even Golden Coral. The food is average and they usually have a salad bar.

Overall you will be hard pressed to find a high-end chain like steakhouse in Germany. I would wait till you get to Bremen and then ask the concierge for their recommendation of a good place. More than likely they will recommend a good restaurant that has steaks on the menu but isn't exclusively a steakhouse. In Germany you will find that most traditional german restaurants do pretty decent steaks.

christianj has got it: Do no expect high-end food from any chain restaurant here, no matter which type/style. This is a general rule, at least for Germany (but I found it true in other countries as well - all right, I've never been to the States). Chains are, well, just chains. Maredo is all right but nothing special. If you want better quality you'll need individual, locally owned restaurants. People at your hotel's desk will know where to go.

The only German city I would rate as having decent steakhouses in the US sense is Frankfurt. There are two quite famous ones (I'll dig the names up if needed) and another is supposed to have opened up just recently. A Belgian gourmand couple I do business with were raving about the newcomer.

Otherwise, for a real "German" experience head out to a butcher shop or traditional "Imbiss" at lunchtime and have a "Schnitzel" (meat cutlet) of your choice with potatos and vegs. Add local beer from the bottle or a plastic cup, the builders and shop owners at the other standing tables and life couldn't be more serene. :) Might even try a "Mettbrotchen" (steak tartare roll) before.

Some upscale Turkish fast food joints in big German cities also do very good meats. Don't go for the doner kebab but the various skewers and lamb chops. You can have some meze for starters and sweet Turkish cakes as dessert.

Rostbraten is even beef. If you are in the south of germany, you can order this.

After having steaks in GOOD steak houses in the US I am happy to refrain from Maredo. However, they do reasonable salads.

I certainly agree about Frankfurt. You are certainly referring to Surf'N'turf and Moultons (not related to the US one). They just opened up a third place, the Ivory Club and this is THE place. Book at least two or three days in advance, better earlier.

Great thread! I've been longing for a good Steak House (a la the Prime Rib in DC) in Germany and will be heading up to Frankfurt to try one of those mentioned.

These three are under the same management and even in reasonable (German) walking distance to each other in the Frankfurt Westend, The Ivory Club is probably the nicest one and serves "contemporary colonial cuisine" and you are free to interpret this in whatever way you like.

Might even try a "Mettbrotchen" (steak tartare roll) before.

Mettbroetchen is not, ever, true " TARTAR " :o

' Mett ' is seasoned ground raw pork.
Mett also if further seasoned to individual taste will become to be the basic meat for Bratwurst;)

A running joke: Mett (in the North of the country = "Hack" or "Gehacktes") is also known as "Maurermarmelade" (mason's jam) because that's what hardworking guys like on their breakfast rolls.

Office jockeys like it too. ;) It's also a perfect German "tapas" together with some white wine (Blutwurst/black pudding with raw onion is great too on a roll as is Pferdesalami/horse meat salami)

I once visited a Block House in Hamburg, and I was very disappointed.

Given the significant number of Indian dishes on the menu, I think it is referring to the cuisine imported and modified from the former British 'colony' of India.

There is (or was) a good steak restaurant in Amsterdam right by the BierKoenig. I don't remember the name of the place, but it was pretty good.

The Bierkoenig is a must every trip into Amsterdam :)

It is for certain that this refers to the style of the restaurant and the dished. However, "Contemporary" and "Colonial" appears to be a certain contradiction in terms.

As mentioned in the Community forum DUS dinner thread, there is a contender for the Frankfurt steak champs a short ride north of DUS in the Neandertal area. It's a "country club" style place with good views and very focused on steak.

Had a great dinner there last year with my brother and his wife and a local German friend who are all very well versed in the secret art of steak connoisseurship. Again, will try to dig up the name as it's a great place to spend lunch or dinner.

There might be a BLOCKHOUSE in Bremen ... OK, but not great.

My favorite in Frankfurt is Buffalo. The service is average, but the steaks are excellent. Haven't tried the Ivory Club yet, however.

Maredo's differ very much between locations. Those in Frankfurt are run by a franchise and are very bad.
