Weimar
My husband and I will spend our 25th anniversary in Weimar this October 8th. Does anyone have any suggestions for an awesome meal or evening event that we would enjoy. We have only been to this town for one night once before and fell in love with the atmosphere but didn't spend enough time to get familiar. Thanks.

Restaurant Anna Amalia in the Hotel Elephant has one star in Michelin guide.

Thanks, now the other shoe. We're vegetarians, do you think we'll be happy with the choices?

The cook is italian, so do you think he isn't able to cook vegetarian?! Generally a "star" kitchen is much more flexible than a normal kitchen. Send a email to the restaurant, and ask for a special vegetarian menu for your event! BTW: Which hotel is already booked? |

The restaurant is part of this hotel, so you can contact the restaurant by this email-contact even. |
We're staying at the Hilton. The name sounded Italian, thank goodness. Generally Italian food is very friendly to vegetarians. When we come to a new area we usually look for Mexican, Italian or Asian food, the choices are usually good but not always the food. I appreciate the recomendation and Michelin's too of course. Now if the dollar would strengthen against the Euro it would be a perfect trip.

The Hilton is not in the centre of weimar, so you have to take a taxi.
Anna Amalia was the name of a local dutchess! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anna_Am...%C3%BCttel |
Is there anything you don't know? I would have never thought Amelia was a German duchess, Italian yes, German not in the first 10 guesses. Now when we finish dinner is there a concert or event we can't miss in Weimar?
p.s. I'm learning alot from this conversation, thanks. |

On 7.October the Nationaltheater is performing Goethe's Torquanto Tasso. I can't think of a better thing than to experience a play by Weimar's leading literary figure in his own city:
http://www.nationaltheater-weimar.de...Torquato+Tasso On 1 December 2007 the historic Anna Amalia Library is reopening its magnificent Rococo Hall, which was so tragically burned in the 2004 fire. You might want to check with your hotel concierge to see if any part of the faciliy might be open to visit before the official opening date. |

FWIW, if you get sick of Weimar and want to see something else, I recommend Thuringia's state capital, Erfurt, which is about 30mins away. Really beautiful town, more city-ish, less touristy, more genuine IMO.
By accident we ended up in Erfurt rather than Weimar on our first visit, and did Weimer as a day trip. We have always returned to stay in Erfurt subsequently. |
