Cheap one-way flights to the USA??

Hello. I'm planning a grand vacation, and I'm stuck at the Germany to USA flight. I'll be arriving to Germany in Berlin, and will probably end up in Bitburg to visit some Air Force friends. They suggested Luxembourg or Frankfurt airports for departing because they are closest to Bitburg.

Checking various websites I have found one way fares for around $5000 and round trip fares for around $500. What is going on here? I'd prefer a one-way flight for under $500.

Can you guys help me to find a reasonable place to look for fares?

You probably won't find it...if you try to book a one way ticket, it will often try and stick you in a very high fare class instead of the lower fare classes reserved for round trips. Your best bet will be to book a round trip ticket and just don't use the return ticket.

Hey CrazyInteg,

as DukieDrew wrote you will mostly find one-way tickets to be very expensive, but things are starting to loosen up a bit. Not knowing when you're planning on travelling or what your preferred destination in the US is, I randomly checked for 10/25 and found the following itinerary:

10/25/07 FRA EWR 1120 1405 on CO51
10/25/07 EWR ORD 1630 1821 on CO1185

price is around 470$.

There are other offers (with AF for example) which are not quite as cheap (~750$).
But it would probably become much cheaper for you if you did an 'open-jaw', i. e. flew from ORD to one city (TXL) and back there from another (FRA) on ONE ticket. Again, not knowing your exact itinerary I checked to give you an example:

10/11/07 ORD JFK 1439 1815 on DL5517
10/11/07 JFK TXL 1920 1000 on DL78
10/25/07 FRA JFK 1205 1450 on DL107
10/25/07 JFK ORD 1630 1836 on DL5469

price: around 790$, so much cheaper than actually buying two one-way tickets! There are plenty of offers for this kind of itinerary, so I guess you don't really have to worry. Just talk to a TA if you can't find fares like that on the internet or ask again for websites.

Have fun in Europe!

wow txl you just gave me a whole new idea.

The plan was USA->Thailand->Germany->USA (around the world!)

When I have some time today I need to check

-USA->Germany
---Germany->Thailand
---Thailand->Germany
-Germany->USA

Whoa, this jaw is wide open! :D

10/11/07 2145 1315 ORD FRA LH433
10/19/07 2235 1355 FRA BKK LH782
10/31/07 1320 1910 BKK FRA LH9719
11/01/07 0810 1134 FRA ORD LH9152
That's around 3230$. And it's not an open jaw, but priced as one ticket.
So it's probably cheaper to buy two separate tickets, e. g. ORD-TXL-FRA-ORD and FRA-BKK-FRA, or to ask a travel agent.
OTOH, if your original plan was to go RTW, why not look up a RTW-fare on *A? Can't be that expensive when you're only planning on two stops and is a really great experience! Start you research here.
Enjoy your trip!

Thanks txl.
I will look into the RTW information.

Right now written on paper, I have:
OMA -> SIN (1 way) ~ $500 (United),
SIN -> Thailand (1 way) ~ $60 (AirAsia or Tiger),
BKK -> TXL (1 way) ~ $450 (LTU),
FRA <--> OMA (roundtrip) ~ $500 (United)

So it's looking to be around $1500 plus taxes, surcharges and international departure fees. So hopefully below $2000. I haven't decided if I want to use miles for any free flights, because that means I will lose my status on United for next year.

Not sure if this is what you want but FRA - LAS (Las Vegas) Condor airlines for 198 Euro.

cheap oneway to the US

You may also consider LTU

http://www.ltu.de
http://www.airberlin.de

They offer oneways for their longhaul flights from DUS to the US. Price of course depends on demand but there are usually some very good deals. Domestic connections to DUS are also possible.

Maybe you´re able to book a LTU-flight BKK-DUS-US (JFK,LAX and others). Don´t know if this is possible, but it´s worth a try.

Your location is Omaha, visiting friends in Bitburg. It seems to add up that you might be DoD mil (AF) affiliated. Are you eligible for military hops? If so, you could fly out of Spangdahlem, right there next to Bitburg, direct into the States. Even commercial charters. If that's the case, I can point you in the right direction.
