DTS is right in that the Lake Constance region is indeed beautiful. I lived there for many years. You will find lots to do to fill two days or more including the medieval castle in Meersburg and the Zeppelin Museum in Friedrichshafen, besides excellent restaurants and charming hotels. BUT this region is not well connected in terms of traffic. From Stuttgart it will take you at least two hours to go there by car and more by train. The closest airport would be FDH (Friedrichshafen) but the connections to FDH are getting worse it seems.

Since you do say that logistics are not a problem this might be still an option but personally I always felt that this region was literally "am Arsch der Welt". Even though it was one pretty arse.

The OP wrote his thread in 2007. I think he decided by now where to got and actually went there.

Still I also like to get some feedback after people ask for suggestions.

You're right, Sweet Willie, I owed some input since everyone was so helpful with their input. My apologies for the delay.

We ended up visiting Heidelberg very briefly, but spent time visiting some of the smaller Odenwald towns like Heppenheim, as well as Miltenberg and others. We really enjoying the sights and low-key feel. it's very easy getting around. for the most part, we missed many of the tourist buses. we were very happy with our choice...seeing th esmaller towns and not devoting all the time to Heidelberg, although we enjoyed what we saw.

again, apologies for the late reply and thanks, again, fro everyone's input.

this thread was timely as an associate is going in a couple weeks and didn't know where to go either.

They decided on Trier and are staying in the same hotel where our family stayed awhile back, the Hotel Petrisberg http://www.hotel-petrisberg.de/en/
