Yes, a yank agrees for your recommendation. :D :D :D

I agree with this as well. I had the opportunity last year to visit the markets in Dusseldorf. Very charming experience!

What about market in Frankfurt....we will be there again early Dec. Did we make a mistake?

Thanks

The OP doesn't want to drive, but for anyone else reading this thread, if you have a car, please don't miss the chance to augment your visit to Neuschwanstein with a visit to the Wies church (search for "Wieskirche" or "Wies Kirche"), which is out in a field ("Wies" is German for "meadow") about a 10 minute drive from the castle, and is one of the most stunning baroque church interiors anywhere.

I've been to Frankfurt a number of times although not during the Christmas Markets. There are some nice areas but I find the city has a little less of the charachter and charm that draws me to Germany. I think the Christmas Market is held in Romer the square there is nice but not spectacular IMO. We'll be flying into FRA but I don't have plans to spend any time there this trip. I'll also be interested in hearing from anyone that can comment on Christmas Market there.

To be honest, FRA is one of the worst cities to me in Germany, beautywise...

Where ever you go, especially in smaller towns, you will find plenty of nice Christmas markets...

If you go South, I especially suggest Munich, Augsburg and Nuernberg(very famous)!!! I am pretty sure that other towns and villages have them, too...

North: Cologne (all of them are superior), Duesseldorf (average - maybe as a German with all those Christmas markets I don't value them that much), don't know about Bonn

I'd be curious about your experience with the 'crowds' in December.

The crowds in December are much more manageable, even though there are fewer tours scheduled. Last December we had a wait of only 40 minutes -- just enough time to walk up the hill. I've been to Neuschwanstein dozens of times with (mostly American) visitors, and I hate the crowds, but I have to admit that the castle is breathtaking on a sunny winter day.

To those of you travelling to Germany this December, check out the SXB Do; Strasbourg is only a short hop from Southern Germany, and it'll be fun. Also, some of the action may spill over to MUC (paging essxjay).

Just visit the central christmas market in Berlin once and you'll change your opinion: it's just an amusement park. So the Frankfurt christams market is not that bad at all… at least IMHO
