Hotels in Cologne / Köln

Premier Inn Cologne City Centre

Hello, is this hotel being rebuilt?
Website says "New Hotel"
https://www.premierinn.com/de/de/hot...ty-centre.html
Weird/random reviews on google maps https://maps.app.goo.gl/8oHLFHNsX975mGyQ7
TA reviews ends 2019 https://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Re...estphalia.html

Looking at dates for end of November and the rates are very good but a bit uneasy of the opening status.

Thank you!

It's the former "Hotel Cristall", still being renovated. The area isn't great either (but better than Premier Inn Mediapark). If you just want something cheap and very near the Central station, I'd probably go for the IBIS inside the station itself.

Note that the location of the Premier Inn on Google Maps is incorrect. The hotel is on the other side of the street (if you go to street view, you can still see the outline of "hotel cristall" on the top floor at the corner of Ursulaplatz and Ursulastrasse).

Hi tom tulpe,

Thank you! I called PI-De (general reservations) and they said opening date is Nov 15th...I'm looking a Nov28-29 and the PI rate (non flex) is 57eur, the Ibis is 126eur. I've stayed at the PI LHR T4 before an it's fine....hmm....

There are several PIs in Germany hat have been converted from older hotels/other chains, and - like in the UK - those are not nearly as good as the ones built for PI from scratch.
Then again, € 68 for these dates can't be beat.

There was an IB flash sale for MAD-DUS Nov 27-30 for 100eur.
Outbound arrives at DUS Wed night 22H30 so planning to stay at the PI near the Dusseldorf-BF for 68eur.
Thu morning head to Cologne for sightseeing and xmas markets, staying at the PI there that night for the 57eur rate.
Fri head to Bonn, hotels at Bonn that night are OK, at Cologne it's very high, but Dusseldorf Melia/Melia Innside is 110/61 so will head back up to Dusseldorf that night.
Sat sight see Dusseldorf and fly back that night....all quite cheep and cheery inline with the flash sale.
Am I missing anything?

Cologne and Bonn are not very far apart, and there's the train and two subway lines connecting them. So you could stay in Bonn instead of Cologne Thu/Fri as well, that also gives you two days in a row at the same place w/o having to check in and out.

Really? It wasn’t the most vibrant part of town when I was there recently—then again, anything north of the station up to Eigelstein-Torburg pretty much fit that description IME—but nothing about it felt unsafe. Plus it’s mere steps to the excellent Schreckenskammer beer hall, and those steps take you past a quaint church with an awesome bone reliquary. Something for everyone!

Unsafe, no.
Not interesting and part of the post-war all-car urban planning, yes.

I give you Schreckenskammer, but even then I'd rather stay somewhere like Maternushaus (which is sold out for @csycsycsy 's dates).

Went with the original Thu/PI/Cologne Fri/Melia/Düsseldorf low/"high" backpacker-y combo in the end as Melia had their club ("level") room at 145eur for fri night. I'm guessing on Fridays Düsseldorf decamps to Cologne, I'll be a forellen going upstream. The 2 nights in Bonn idea is nice and it'll allow checking out their xmas market at night though.

Will book a free canx in Cologne for Thu in case the PI falls through.

Thanks for the Schreckenskammer recommendation! I'll stop OT-ing and will continue on the other threads.

happy to report back that the new Premier Inn Cologne City was great, but Schreckenskammer was even better! Thank you for the help.

OT - it was fun at Cologne HBF trying to get back to Dusseldorf...the S6 is slower and lightly delayed, the REx is faster but keeps phantoming....
