Frankfurt. Things to do?

I need to fly from London to Frankfurt on a Friday in mid August, to drop something off.

Haven't booked the return flight as yet

I was thinking of hanging around in that part of Germany for a couple of days and return to London on the Monday....

Is there much to do in Frankfurt?
Enough for 3 days?

Or would I be better jumping on a train and spending a few days in Munich, Salzburg etc and returning to London from there?

Just can't seem to find much of interest in Frankfurt on Google etc

For a day out I'd hop on a train to Rudesheim on Rhein and have a walk around after getting the old chair lift up towards Niederwald monument.

There's an abbey and castle nearby too.

Actually, there's quite a lot of interest in Frankfurt if you're prepared to look under the surface. You could hang out in Sachsenhausen which is quite a lively and pleasant district. And there's a good number of museums, if you're into that.

Not far away (a quick S-Bahn ride) is my personal favourite, Mainz, where you could scrutinize the Gutenberg bibles, visit a series of small but amazing churches (one has windows created by Chagall) as well as the cathedral (Dom) and walk along the Rhine waterfront. You could get lost in the old town among timber framed buildings and dance on the tables in breweries and Weingut establishments. The nearby town of Wiesbaden (just a few minutes with S-Bahn train) is really pleasant too.

Or you could hop a regional train down the western side of the Rhine gorge (Rheinschlucht) and see the famous castles, among them Lorelei. You could go as far as Koblenz and come back.
Or go hiking in the Taunus.

As major European cities go it is relatively crap. Take advantage of the excellent rail network and skidaddle.

😂😂

Thanks for the confirmation
That was the conclusion that I was fast arriving at

European train travel is very cheap and reliable, so was considering a trip somewhere.
Hence I have not as yet booked a return flight.

Thanks to the others above.
I have been to Mainz in December for Christmas markets along with Heidelberg and Nuremberg.

I will look at the other suggestions above
Got a few months yet to organise

Thanks all

When I was in Frankfurt, I just used it as a base to visit places like Mainz that are easy to do by train as a day trip. I spent only the morning before my departing flight looking round Frankfurt itself and I didn't think I was missing out. Much of the central area of old Frankfurt was destroyed by bombing in World War 2 so although the buildings there may look old, they are usually post-1945 reconstructions.

The scenery on the train up to Cologne is lovely though, consider that as an option as option jaw for the way back.

Frankfurt is a vibrant city with a lot to offer visitors. Some popular attractions include the historic Römerberg square, the Goethe House and Museum, the Palmengarten botanical garden, and the Frankfurt Cathedral.

If you're interested in exploring other areas, Munich and Salzburg are also great options. Munich is known for its beautiful architecture, world-class museums, and beer.

I have been in Frankfurt many times for business -- usually one to two days at a time. I often stayed at the airport. But, I recall going to a Jewish Museum that at the time had an Anne Frank exhibit and an art museum.
I'm not an expert but I don't think there would be 3 to 4 days to do in Frankfurt. The outlying area is lovely, but I would not see 3-4 days in Frankfurt.

Stay in Frankfurt and enjoy the museums. There are many to choose from depending upon your interests. I enjoyed the Bundesbank's Geldmuseum: https://www.bundesbank.de/en/bundesbank/money-museum See also https://whichmuseum.com/place/frankf...0/best-museums

Frankfurt has a very nice art museum, the Städel. I haven't been there in years, but I thought Frankfurt was a lovely place to spend a couple of days. I recall spending a lot of time just wandering through downtown.

I’m surprised no one mentioned the Main tower for a great view over the city.

Love all the suggestions, but if it's not a given already, definitely grab a beer the size of your face!

Frankfurt/Main is a decent place to work and do business. But as far as cultural attractions, it pales in contrast to other European metropôles. This is why when you come in August, the city will be deserted as nearly all the inhabitants that have the means to do so, leave and take summer holidays elsewhere.

I would follow the suggestions of the people who posted above, just be aware that summer school holidays (July-August) is when there is a lot of construction and rehabilitation in the public transports, so be ready for some disruptions. And that's on top of the long-term works in progress on the long-distance lignes to the south and east that may cause delays.

In one of my passages through Frankfurt, I went to Bamberg. If you're into beer tourism, this is a great visit and quite affordable. I'm not a big beer drinker (2 is my limit), but this place is an exceptional experience. I took a slow regional train, but there are faster options. Total transit time 2-3.5 hours depending on train schedules, less than Munich or Salzburg (which is just incredible BTW and should eventually be visited). Beyond that, most of my experience is around Bundesliga stadiums. I tend to need only fill 4-5 hours around any particular city. Even Frankfurt has enough to fill a half day itinerary.
