12 Hours in Munich (6 May)
Hi everyone,
Expected to be in Munich for about 12 hours this coming Saturday. Not sure if I should explore it, or check out Augsburg instead. Also, is there a train pass that would cover trips between the airport and Augsburg (i.e. is there a Bayern ticket or something?) And, is there a KaDeWe equivalent in Munich? Appreciate your replies, FFF |

Not sure if there's much point going to Augsburg (why, even?), since you have to bactrack to Munich to catch a train to Augsburg.
Are you recommending that I don't travel somewhere? Augsburg is closer to Munich than anywhere else I'm going, not to mention Augsburg doesn't have a useful airport, so here we are;) Besides, the water mills and canals look neat. There is literally a Bayern ticket :D https://www.bahn.com/en/offers/regio...et-for-bavaria It doesn't cover ICE or EC trains, though, only regional trains, which makes your potential connection to Augsburg even longer... Good advice. Are regional trains the slowest ones? Do you have an alternative recommendation to Augsburg (for history/architecture) as a day trip from Munich (that is accessible by train)? |
Regensburg is a nice day trip and worth visiting. And accessible by train from MUC.
|
The slowest train is normally the S-Bahn, Regionalbahn is a little bit faster. Fastest is ICE which you can't use with the Bayernticket.
This said routes including an ICE from the airport to Augsburg are not really faster than the routes with regional trains only. But you are more flexible. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...4e2797cb0.jpeg When it comes to Augsburg there is no direct train from the airport, you have to change trains in Munich. If someone doesn't know Augsburg and Munich, I would recommend Munich. If someone knows Munich, but not Augsburg, it's a decent choice. |

If you do decide for Freising, give me a shout, I'll recommend some good cafes and places to eat, I spent several months there some time ago :) |

Someone already mentioned Regensburg - there's a direct Regional train from MUC Airport Station to Regensburg. For a very chill day trip, I would recommend Freising as well. Direct bus, or the aforementioned regional train - it makes a stop in Freising on the way to Regensburg. Freising is small, but very historical. World's largest continuously operating brewery, Weihenstephan, is on a hill, and on another hill is the cathedral, which is absolutely stunning inside. It may not keep you occupied for your full 12 hours, but at least you won't be rushing to get to or from the airport.

I'm a bit confused. Sounds like you haven't explored Munich before. If true, why wouldn't you explore Munich as it has a lot of everything in terms of history, architecture, gardens, shopping, restaurants, museums, etc.

Appreciate everyone's replies! Good suggestions in here.

n.b. I have been to Munich once, but it left no impression, save for the glockenspiel being neat.

Altes Gefängnis ("The Old Prison") is a great restaurant with local(ish) food in, as the name says, the old prison. Near Junkers, https://goo.gl/maps/iwawxq2AGrte8jez8 - just up the hill from the restaurant is the cathedral. Do check it out. |
May 6 happens to be ‘Die Lange Nacht der Musik’ (The Long Night of Music) in Munich this year. All kind of live music performances around town starting from 8pm. You may want to just get into old town and take a look there.

Good idea, but hard to manage if you have to catch the train back to the airport at 20:00.

A suggestion I have for the OP is to visit, at least the outside, the University of Music and Performing Arts because that place has seen so much history in its lifetime and is a stunning building - both good and bad especially Room A105
