DUS queues?

Departing on a DUS-CDG-BKK flight on Saturday June 25th. Wondering if anyone can share recent experience regarding checkin or security queues at Düsseldorf Airport.

On the 15th at 8.00 am 10 minutes with priority

FLYGVA Jun 21, 2022 3:21 am

Saturday has usually much longer queues and thus waiting times.

I myself queued on June 15 at 3:30 pm for 12 minutes at B (without priorirty, which was not open).

A colleague flew on June 11 (Saturday around 2 pm and queued for up to 2 hours). You can walk between terminals A/B/C airside, so take secruity with the shorter lines. B is usually the fastest from my experience, C comes with a lot of charter flights last.

Note that NRW state school vacations start this weekend so on Saturday June 25 DUS will be overrun by holiday crowds in every possible checkpoint.

I am reminded of my trip to DUS last year where I came across this massive queuing area …

Seems to be very variable then. Not sure how 2021 is a good comparison as things are quite different. I mean I also flew from DUS when covid in Germany was very high and I waited for 1 minute.

Recent reviews on Google maps show lots of complaints but also a few people saying it was very quick.

I have a flight at 1015 next Thursday... any guesses as to how it will be? I would hope if there are queues in the early morning they will be cleared by 8-ish... I was planning to arrive at 0830 but not sure if that will be ok...

Will be probably one of the worst weekends of the year. Two years no real summer vacation due to corona restrictions and now understaffed airports. Plan with a lot of extra time (one to two hours extra depending if you need to drop off luggage or not)

FLYGVA Jun 24, 2022 12:21 pm

It was a nightmare today and it will probably worse tomorrow. Expect queuing for check in up to two hours and at least one hour for security. It is of course very helpful, that some airlines only open their counters three hours for departure ....

This would be the time I would really consider the ridiculous overpriced VIP-service,

The VIP Service is available as VIP Service Business for Schengen departures (you need to check in yourself, but can skip security via VIP Lounge (45 minutes time in the VIP Lounge) for 180 EUR. The VIP Premium Service is 350 EUR per person incl. two checked pieces of luggage and two hours in the lounge.

Further information could be found here in German : https://www.dus.com/de-de/informieren/vip-service

I have to admit, that I have not experience with this service. And actually, they are on several days already fully booked

Also never did it as I think it's too expensive for what you get. But I read some time ago that someone used it during a strike.

Looks like they had problems with the baggage handling system on 6/25

Thanks for all the feedback.

Actual experience after the fact ... on Saturday June 25th at around 11:30am flying out of terminal B ... there was 1 person in front of me at the security queue. Which was my wife.

:D! Jul 2, 2022 5:37 am

Was pretty much a pre-covid experience for me on Thursday 30th too, the only difference being that everyone wore masks on the Sky Train. So I went extra early for nothing (mainly DB's fault because the trains on the Ruhr valley were really delayed on the 29th morning - resulting in compo from DB, but on the 30th they were on time).

Passport control took longer than security. The signage at C gates is not good as lots of Germans joined the manual queue when they meant to go to the e-gates, and lots of non-EU somehow ended up at the e-gates when they didn't mean to go there...

Have a flight from AMS-PRG for early August, but it appears that AMS will be a living hell for the foreseeable future so I am looking for alternatives. I know DUS was having issues recently, but it seems to be infinitely better than AMS. Does EW J get priority security at DUS? The flight in on a Wednesday night, so should not be a peak time???

I have a morning flight out of DUS coming up on EW, no business class on that flight so I guess no priority at security. Tempted to go with the VIP service for Eur 180 if it saves me from standing in line a couple of hours. I can’t find any reviews about their service anywhere which is a bit odd. Not expecting FRA FCT service but it appears they have security in their own lounge and then drive you to the gate, is that right? Getting to their lounge an hour before the flight, mobile boarding pass and carry on only, should then be doable. Which sounds pretty daring these days in DUS.

They have security in the lounge. But I would contact them in advance to verify.

To answer my own question, I arrived at DUS at 15:00 for a 18:40 flight last Wednesday. There were zero queues for security at any of the three terminals, and there was practically no wait for check-in for EW.

Departing non-Schengen (for the UK) next Monday at around 13.00. Hand baggage only and should have online check-in, so hopefully will be bypassing any check-in desks. Have an EU passport and should have fast-track security (if there is any). Any ideas what to expect in terms of queues?

seawolf Aug 17, 2022 7:50 pm

Pre-COVID I never seen a queue more than 10 minutes at DUS. But I only fly 2-3 times per year from DUS and never flew during school holidays either.

Are queues the new norm or just school holidays?

I think the queues will stay until the end of summer. The whole industry did not expect such a quick rise in travellers and underestimated the challenges to hire enough staff. Hopefully we will see an improvement in October and the following months.

Also pre-Covid I experienced long queues. It was often a mess.

DUS has been notorious for queues for a long time. Security at A was often crowded, moving to B eased the pain, at least after AB‘s demise.

Any recent experiences? I'm curious to know what I can expect on Monday, September 5th?
I'm flying with BA.

It has been a while since I departed from DUS. I always found that check-in, security, etc went very smooth so I was surprised to read that the airport was notorious for queues already pre-covid.

Holidays in NRW ended on the 9th, so the stress should be gone.

You can get a good feel for how busy the Terminal is by taking a look at their Webcam:

https://www.dus.com/de-de/erleben/webcams

FLYGVA Sep 1, 2022 8:51 am

my recent experiences:
Thursday, August 25 09:30: A & B 10 - 15 minutes C< 5 minutes
Wednesday, August 31 11:30 A & C 10 - 15 minutes B 5 - 10 minutes

It is, as mentioned oliver2002 not that bad currently. Fast Track was not open

thomas199023 Nov 11, 2022 1:41 am

How is the situation at DUS these days?
LH flight departing at 6:25AM next Thursday. Staying at the Airport Sheraton the night before, checking in LH *G with luggage.
What time should we aim to leave the Sheraton?

I assume you already departed? I wanted to ask a colleague, you flew around the same time on November 10 but forgot it due some business nightmare .... He mentioned longer lines and 20 minutes wait at A, longer at C and B.

thomas199023 Nov 18, 2022 9:05 am

Flew yesterday, took about 10-20 Minutes for security around 5AM. At A gates, fast track line was open but just fed into the normal line, skipped maybe 10 people?
Not too bad, lots of bags went to secondary though oddly.

:D! Dec 9, 2022 4:10 am

Long queues yesterday afternoon, priority lane closed, took about 30 minutes to get through. Problem is only one person can unload at a time and if they don't understand what laptops out means, everyone else has to wait until they do get it.

At passports they had 2 officers on the EU side and 1 on the non-EU side. When nobody was going to the EU officers (most of the time, since the e-gates were operational), the officers would signal to the next waiting non-EU passenger, but most of the passengers were not paying attention so nobody moved and the non-EU officer did 3 times as much work as the others.

DUS will have quite a bit of construction in the next months:

Düsseldorf Airport gets ready for the 2023 travel season

Renovation work in terminal and duty-free area / security checkpoint and self-bag drop machines

Düsseldorf Airport is taking advantage of the lower-traffic period outside the travel season to carry out extensive modernization and conversion work. The work, which will begin this week, is to take place without any operational restrictions or limitations for passengers and is to be completed by the summer vacations.

In Terminal Area A, access to the gate after security screening will be widened and operational use of the screening lane at the gate entrance will be improved. The lane in question will be closed for the duration of the work. The security checks in the other four control lanes in front of Pier A will not be affected by the reconstruction work.

In Terminal Section C, installation work has begun on the spatial expansion of the sensor system, which will cover a larger area in front of the security checkpoints. This will enable more accurate forecasts of waiting times, improving processes and staff deployment.

Ten self-bag drop machines are also to be installed in terminal area A. Check-in counters 101 to 120 will be taken out of service as part of the installation work. By the start of the summer vacation period, passengers will have access to ten staffed check-in counters and ten self-bag drop counters with upstream machines for printing baggage labels. This will make checking in baggage faster and more convenient.

The duty-free area will also be redesigned after the new operator Heinemann takes over the total of four stores in all three gates A, B and C..

Hi all,

Asking here for a friend who's planning flying into DUS on EK55 (business class) on a Friday in early March 2023 - scheduled arrival time 12.40pm and on FlightAware the arrival times seem fairly consistent over the past couple weeks.
She does however have a meeting in the middle of town at 2.30pm.
Assuming there are no major delays on the flight side, how long would it take her to exit the terminal to make her way into town?

Would be great to get an opinion on this - my guess is that she should be able to get out by ~1.30pm but I don't know how long it takes to clear immigration and get bags.
It has been many years since I last went to DUS so I don't remember how busy it gets!

Thanks!

offerendum Jan 20, 2023 12:41 pm

Normally it's quite fast, never really had to wait at immigration. Baggage claim is often slow which means 15 minutes or so.
