Oktoberfest to resume in 2022 (Sep17-Oct3)

The world-famous Oktoberfest is to take place again this year in the Bavarian capital, Munich, after a two-year break caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

Announcing the resumption of the festival, Munich Mayor Dieter Reiter said he had had a hard time making the decision because of the war in Ukraine.

He said that no coronavirus restrictions would be imposed on visitors as there was no legal basis for doing so.

It will be held from Saturday, September 17th until Monday, October 3rd. October 3rd is a public holiday which means the Oktoberfest runs a day longer than normally.

Opening will be at noon of the 17th, tents are open earlier but no beer will be served until the mayor has opened it the first barrel at noon and spoken the famous words:"O'Zapft is. Auf eine friedliche Wiesn."

I have had my travel plans set for some time now, hoping for this type of news. Can't wait to get back to the fun after a couple years off.

Beer prices have been set. Not really a surprise, but up from 2019. Most in the 13 Euro range now.

The price of beer at Oktoberfest 2022 will range from €12.60 to €13.80, an average of 15.77 percent more than in 2019.

Really looking forward to getting back to the fun. Any predictions for this year's event? Same as always? Slower than usual? More packed?

I'm going to say it's going to be very packed. I've seen some days already unavailable for reservations for several tents on days I'd not have expected.

The prices are not surprising and still compared to some other European countries still in a normal range. Food will be more expansive, too.

In my opinion it will be full. Other festivals are well visited and a lot of people craving for these kind of events after 2 years. Question is how many international visitors will come.

Interesting. I never even look at reservation availability as I travel solo. I tend to tent-hop, finding a spare spot at a table and make some new friends. Haha.
End up in the outside/garden area some, but all good unless the weather turns to crap.

I just finished up my short, traditional opening weekend visit. Weather was pretty bad. Cold and rainy for most of the time.

I was expecting it to be much more "packed". Very little issue getting into tents when during other years it would have been tough. Not sure if a combination of the weather or lingering Covid concerns.

Met many great folks from around the globe, and sampled each of the brews on offer. Surprising, Hacker-Pschorr was a bit of a letdown this year, but can't put my finger quite on why. Just did not seems as "drinkable" as previous years. . Augustiner was a standout, as usual.

Now time to dry out a bit, and get back to the real world. Any one else visit yet? Your thoughts?

Went on Sunday and Tuesday, concur on the lighter traffic. Very similar to 2015 when people thought that refugees are camping on the wiesn and that we needed a security fence.

It seems people are still concerned about covid, I had a few friends cancel a few days before. I'm fine with lighter crowds, hope everyone stays healthy. Cracked one my crowns on a brezn the first day and went to the dentist yesterday. He mentioned that I'm his first Ofest customer (it seems the nuts and beer mug incidents give him good business each year) and that friends of the family got covid already after going to the wiesn on opening day.

That's the reason I won't go this year. I have a vacation upcoming and do not want to catch a last minute covid infection. I already had it in May but I do not want to jeopardize my vacation trip.

But so far it seems that less people are coming but to be honest the weather was really unpleasant so far. Cold and rainy.

Enough time has passed now and I have escaped without catching COVID from the event. Who knew drinking with 10,000 of my closest friends could be so safe...?

I did get a head cold somewhere along the way. But that seems to be going around quite a bit.

'til next year...
