Munich: Restaurant recommendations
Looking for restaurant recommendations in Munich - Bavarian/Swabian cuisine & Greek or Russian cuisine. Must be easily accessible by public transport and the quality of the food is paramount.
NOT looking for touristy places per se, though atmosphere is always welcome. Pricing at moderate or even better at the lower end of the scale. We are also very receptive to a good 'Mittagsmenu'! Any secret hideouts that you can share? |
Hi,
I'm not even sure there is a Russian restaurant in Munich. I only know a russian bar Salon Irkutsk https://www.salonirkutsk.com/ which is okay. About greek restaurants. The greek restaurants in Germany tend to have a very hearty homestyle cuisine. I'm not aware if any real good greek restaurant downtown Munich. The ones that are better are in the suburbs where the rent is cheaper and normally only the locals know them better. About Bavarian cuisine: Georgenhof https://www.georgenhof-muenchen.de/en Gasthaus Weinbauer Gasthaus Weinbauer Beim Sedlmayr, Westenriederstr. 14 near Viktualienmarkt (do not come too late in the evening (after 8pm) since they use fresh ingredients (almost nothing frozen) and as later it gets they run out of the fresh stuff) |
Quite good was "Zum Franziskaner" opposite of the Opera or "Wirtshaus in der Au", especially for Knödel.

One of the few authentic places left in downtown is the Schneider Bräuhaus: https://www.schneider-brauhaus.de/en/home-en/
Also good is the Augustiner: https://www.braeustuben.de/en/premises/#bierhalle (one of the few breweries in town) In spite of a substantial population of Russian origin, Munich really has no typical restaurant. The Georgian place called 'Iveria' has bloody good food from the caucasus: Georgian Restaurant in Munich | IVERIA (Our Russian friend took us there once ;)) Real Turkish cuisine: https://restaurant-keko.de/ |
Thanks Oliver for the suggestions. Keko sounds good and the fish on their menu looks quite appealing to me and I will probably try it out; ae there any particular dishes there that you would recommend?
Iveria sounds interesting, especially since I never made it to Georgia other than an hour long transit stop in Tbilisi airport, but it seems at present they are takeaway only and no sit-down dining is available - so we will have to pass on that. What really bugs me is that I cannot recall the name of my favourite Greek restaurant which unfortunately does not exist any more: It was near Viktualienmarkt on Praelat-Zistlstr. diagonally across the Straubinger Hof (another place I visited a few times for their Mittagskarte). Anyway, if you know of a good Greek place with modest prices please let me know - I do not mind a ride on the S/U Bahn to somewhere away from the centre of Munich. |
My favorite Greek is Paros near Max Weber Platz. Great food.
