I would do Berlin, Prague, Vienna, Salzburg, Munich. Longest train trip will be about 4 hours. All great cities with Prague being my favorite.

For a day trip from Cologne, consider Aachen.

It is really difficult to recommend something for a Germany trip of 2 weeks starting in Berlin, ending in Munich.
I would like to categorize a bit different to previous posters, so you can pick on your own. And of course, it is the absolute correct, totally impartial and 100% objective list :p;) Must see Berlin - like others said - 3+ days Munich - like others said - 2+ days Interesting Potsdam - can do from Berlin in a day trip Dresden - easy to get there within 2 hours from Berlin, 1 day Nuremberg - 1 day, but also continue other Franconian cities nearby Heidelberg - 1 day Castle Neuschwanstein - 1 day - it is just THE picture post card thing in Germany people love, although I don't share this as a German, but most visitors were sooooo amaaaaaazed. Probably best to take a car or organized tour from Munich. Hidden gems (added some links here) Spreewald - UNESCO world nature heritage, just between Berlin and Dresden (by car). But English is not commonly spoken in more rural East German areas - just for an afternoon, a boat or kayaking tour - just so relaxing Franconia - cities such as Bamberg, Würzburg, Aschaffenburg and Rothenburg ob der Tauber - especially when you get to Würzburg it is the Franconian wine region, and castles of course along the Castle Road - depends on how many you want to see from 1 day until 3-4 days Concentration camp - If you ever plan to visit or have visited Krakow (and nearby Auschwitz) skip it, but otherwise you may want to visit Buchenwald (near Weimar), Dachau (near München) or Sachsenhausen (near Berlin) - in that order of relevance - do one only, half day should be enough Throw a coin (depends if you still have time) Cologne - beside the Cathedral and the small old town with its unique Breweries, not much to see either. (< 1 day) Rhine Valley - if you still decide to go to Cologne or Düsseldorf, well yes, then cross the Rhine Valley (time depends on how many castles you want to climb) Leipzig - it's nice, so if you have time ... (< 1 day) Weimar - If by any chance you have a keen interest in German classical literature, it is a must see spot (also Buchenwald nearby - with Buchenwald 1 day) Black Forest - well, eat cake there :rolleyes: - and enjoy the scenery - but it is a bit far off your route Well overrated Frankfurt - Nothing really to see, what you cannot see in other big cities, too. Not too much cultural sports in comparison to others. Stuttgart - Industry Düsseldorf - not many scenic spots to see Most time recommendations are noted for visits without too many gallery and museum visits. If you want to include this, you could also spend 2 weeks in Berlin alone. I excluded everything north of a line Berlin to Düsseldorf, since this is not so practical to your route, unless you desperately want to see Hamburg, which would be understandable. |

Neuschwanstein has become insufferable with the hoards of tourists there. It was always bad, but now it's terrible.

:p :D I hear people say that Frankfurt is good because it is close to Mainz, Heidelberg, and Wiesbaden, I often think about people describing Sacramento as good because it is close to Tahoe, San Fran, etc. When the top things about a city are that it is good to be somewhere else...... |
