Towns near FRA for daytime layover in winter
 

I am looking at towns near Frankfurt airport for a 10-hr layover at FRA on a Saturday in early March. I have already been to Mainz (which was great) and Frankfurt itself, and plan to visit Wiesbaden on a shorter layover. I'm looking for somewhere on a train line, less than 15-20 euros return (since I will be jetlagged and a quick visit anyway), which is pretty to walk around, small enough to explore on foot in an afternoon, and where I do not need to spend more than 10 euros on admissions (so will not do spas or similar, but a museum is fine). A bonus would be if there is a walking trail nearby in a nice park or hills on outskirts of town.

I've searched on this forum and am introducing a new thread because many suggestions are further away, better for summer months, or require a car. Previous helpful suggestions on this site and elsewhere which might fit the bill are Budingen (may be best, but farthest), Bad Homburg (closest, but looks least interesting), Bacharach (middle option, may be with pretty train ride), and Idstein. Any tips? Thanks in advance.

Heidelberg might work. I am actually not sure if there is a direct train from FRA. At worse you need to change in Mannheim. The Castle admission is under 15 Euros, there are trails in the hills opposite the city.

I love the towns along the Rhein. You can do the west side or the east side. On the east side, the most famous town is Rüdesheim which is very quaint, but also very popular. Still, in early March it won't be so crowded. It is at the outer edge of the Frankfurt area public transit network, so you can get a day pass for the trip via Wiesbaden for €16,75. Another option is to take the train via Mainz to Bacharach and Oberwesel on the west side. A € 24,10 day pass will get you as far as Bacharach, and € 5,40 covers the short hop from there to Oberwesel. These are just two highly quaint towns which are less touristy than Rüdesheim. The trip to either one takes from 60 to 80 minutes. If the weather isn't terrible, that's what I'd do.

Some other options are Miltenberg, or Marburg. Small, pretty, hilly. Not very close, but also not too too far from FRA.

Thank you for your help, these are good options. @david7031, have you rented bikes along there (or know how to do it)? It sounds like that could be a nice way to see some of those towns.

I have never rented a bike there, because I live in Germany, and when I rode along the Rhein, I brought my own bike. However, I just put "Fahrradverleih xxx" into Google, where xxx is the name of the towns. I came up with one person (Heidi Weber) in Bacharach (https://rhein-nahe-touristik.de/aktivitaeten/radfahren/) as well as one small agency in Bingen (http://fahrradverleih-bingen.de) that rent bicycles.Whether or not they are open on a Saturday in March I don't know, but there are E-Mail addresses where you can inquire. Riding along the Rhein and exploring those small towns is a great idea, lots of fun. Just remember that the weather in early March can be...variable!

Aschaffenburg is a great city about 45 mins to an hour (depending if you take an ICE or a RE).

Very nice castle on the Main, nice pedestrian mall with typical German stores, some decent restaurants, etc....

I use to spend weekends there when i was in Stuttgart and will do so when i get back there in the very near future.

Also, someone mentioned Miltenburg. Another great little city to explore but its a wee bit farther South of Aschaffenburg.

Go to Oberursel, which is just a few kilometers to the north of Frankfurt and can easily be reached with the S-Bahn from the airport. From the city train station it is an easy walk into the old town (there's a brewery you can go to or a few cafes). From the Oberursel train station take the U3 to the Hohemark end station, where you are at the foot of the Taunus hilly area, where you can easily hike.
