UA ticket STL-EWR-MUC-VCE: short tagging?

STL-EWR-MUC-VCE

Family of 4 trip: looking at possibly skiplagging the MUC-VCE leg of this flight, and taking the train ride thru the Alps to Venice. The MUC layover is 9hrs if that matters.

So, how does MUC handle transiting? Will we go thru immigration, collect our bags, then have to go thru customs & check our bags again for the last leg [Air Dolomiti] to Venice?

I doubt UA will short-check your bag as that will raise questions about a re-fare of your ticket (and could be very expensive).
If checked through, you would not see your bag(s) until it/they arrive in VCE.
As to arrival in MUC, you will have to go through immigration as you are entering Europe and the Schengen zone ... and then customs in VCE with your bag(s).
Is this one-way or part of a return?
If the latter, then the rest of your itinerary will be cancelled.

Well, this leg was booked as a one way, as is the return from Rome; the United app was acting a bit wonky so that is the only way I could find our flights.

So, you're saying in Munich, we will *not* collect our checked bags to pass thru immigration, correct?

Correct.
MUC is a very easy airport to connect through. From the UA forum https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/unit...unich-muc.html
And don't spend your layover at the airport. If you look a couple of threads down you find this https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/germ...er-munich.html with ideas of what to do and see in Munich.

With a 9-hour layover, I would think requesting the agent in STL to short-check shouldn't be a problem. As the OP I'd tell them that, due to the long layover, I have booked a transit hotel and will need to access the contents of the bag.

Yes. However: I am so amazed. These topics have been discussed dozens of times on FT. If one is not familiar with a different continent, why not preparing a bit more and reading a bit more before the same questions are raised again and again
