Day to Frankfurt
 

Dear all,

I have made plans to go Germany in march. My flight will land me in Frankfurt and departing from Frankfurt

As this is my first time exploring to Germany, is there any suggestions on the cities i can visit? my travelling period is 18 - 23 March.

Germany is a large country with a lot to see and do. You have about 5 full days? It would be helpful if you were more specific regarding what you like to see and do on your trips. Will you stay in Frankfurt the whole time? If not, will you be renting a car or depending on trains?

About the only advice you can get at this point is don't plan too much in that time. Stay around the Frankfurt area or plan on Frankfurt + one other city. Maybe Cologne or Nuremburg, if you want a larger city?

It really depends what you want to see. Cities or countryside? Nightlife or history and achitecture?

I would agree that you should not try to do too much in 5 days.

Frankfurt is mainly a business-orientated city, but there are plenty of nice things close by. Cologne is a lovely city, with a nice cathedral and a more relaxed atmosphere than Frankfurt. Mainz is pretty too, and the Mosel Valley between Trier and Koblenz is spectacular.

What are you interested in? If you've decided to fly to Germany and paid for the flights you must have had something in mind.

Indeed there are many options. Depends on your likings which direction (for example Alps/ Munich or Berlin/ Hamburg or Cologne/ Mains) is preferable.

I second what others have said on not packing too much into those five days.

You can easily just stay in Frankfurt and do various cool stuff there in five days. If you want to venture outside of Frankfurt, do not go too far (maybe Heidelberg, Würzburg, Cologne) as you will spend too much of your precious time on the road/train/airport if you decide to go to places like Berlin/Hamburg or Munich.

As noted it's a pretty enormous country with lots of interesting places.

6 days is not much time. I agree that sticking relatively close to FRA makes sense. I really enjoyed Mainz which is quite closeby. You could split your time between those two cities and have more than enough to see and do.

We've got a similar amount of time in April, also flying in/out of Frankfurt. Here's the loop I've sketched out, based on wife and me having been to Germany for a much longer trip in the past (revisiting some favorites), and having our young daughter and her Grandmother along for their first visit:

Day 1: Arrive FRA, spend afternoon exploring Romerberg and Museum-bank.
Day 2: P/U rental car, head to Rothenburg ob der Tauber. Spend day exploring the wall and town, Crime and Punishment Museum, evening Night Watchman's tour.
Day 3: Depart via the Castle Road. Schwabisch Hall, St. Michaels, etc. along the way. Arrive afternoon in Baden Baden. Enjoy Roman-Irish baths, walk the town center, maybe visit casino in the evening.
Day 4: Day-trip to Black Forest area via the Open Air museum, maybe Triberg. Return to Baden Baden.
Day 5: Depart for Bacharach and the Rhine. Short river cruise to St Goar, walk Rheinfels castle, etc. Sleep in Bacharach
Day 6: Day-trip to Burg Eltz, possibly other portion of Mosel area, return to Bacharach
Day 7: Early morning depart for FRA, return rental car and fly home

Obviously this is one day longer than you have, but it packs a lot into a convenient "loop". Remove either of the "day-trip" days if you're comfortable changing hotels nearly every night, or drop one of the middle points and tighten up the loop slightly. Look at running the loop anti-clockwise also. Depending on flight times, you could hit Burg Eltz on the same day you leave Frankfurt on your way to the Rhine. You can could also just do 1/2 a day in Rothenburg for the highlights, but you'll miss out on some of the charm if you only see it while the tour-buses are in town.

Alternatively, setup in a cheap AirBnB in Frankfurt, really dig into that city and just take a few day-trips by train or boat out to Koblenz, etc. and rent a car 1-2 days for any other nearby destinations not easily-serviced by train/boat.

If I only had 5 days in Germany I'd just do Berlin and Munich highlights and leave it at that

If you have time, hike up to the castle. It's a fairly easy walk from Moselkern and not especially time-consuming.
