Shipping household items Germany to US???
 

I have inherited a couple of oriental rugs ... probably not worth much, but high sentimental value. Am not willing (or able) to pay for air freight, so looking to ship via sea cargo.

I could deliver in Hamburg to the airport or harbor, pick up California.

Three rugs:The obvious first choices, like DHL, wanted $2,400 for the first rug via air. :eek:

I have called companies that sell oriental rugs in Hamburg .... plenty of stores, but they will not help me with shipping, even for a referral or agent's fee, not even a referral to a company.

I have called shipping lines. They only handle commercial accounts or are looking to move entire householders (by the container).

Any suggestions on who to contact to move only these three items?

I had not found that firm but did an online estimate. About €500 plus US$100.

I fear I may ditch the rugs in Germany. No resell value and among 20++ friends, no on wants them. :(

Google for Port of Bremerhaven or Hamburg and see the directory of companies operating there. They will solve this immediately via a shared 20'/40' container

Why not call someone like Kuehne & Nagel? http://www.kn-portal.com

The cheapest way is to contact the international removal companies (Internationale Möbeltransporte, like Kühne&Nagel, hertling.com, ito-movers.de etc.)and ask them for a so called by-pack. then your stuff gets transported with an already scheduled transport and is added to fill the container.

K&N wants €2650 for Hamburg to Port of Oakland shipping ..... partial container. Plus harbor fees in Oak and duty to be determined.

I was surprised ... had not considered LH cargo. I'll give a call on Monday. But they fly out of FRA/MUC/BER only, and on West Coast, only to LAX.

Are the above measurements in feet or meters?

Feet, but approximations. I assume I would roll them and wrap in a heavy plastic.

Have you found out anything more in the past month that might be helpful to others finding this thread, kevinsac?

We used a small-ish sea container to move our household from Germany to Texas, but I've never been able to find anything cost effective for smaller shipments. We will be facing this question again shortly in respect of some inherited household items and personal effects that we would be reluctant to part with.

I don't know what you expected to find, but that seems very reasonable to me, considering you could pay that to ship by truck across country just within the US.

Indeed - almost ridiculously cheap. Will they advise you on the Customs paperwork as that can by very complicated for goods arriving in the US?

I agree - I work for a company already mentioned in this thread, and I think this is about the best you're going to find.
