TXL

Arriving TXL on BA, is there a ticket machine in the terminal where I can buy a day pass for public transport for the following day, using coins? I.e. where the ticket is not validated, and also as the bus driver won't appreciate me paying all in 10c

Go to the ticket desk near the terminal exit diagonally across from Lufthansa First Classs Check-In. They will take your money and sell you a non-validated one-day pass which you could use for the next day.

This would be useful information as I have piles of Euro coppers and I've never figured a good way of getting rid of them. The machine will have to take low denomination coins.

Machines generally don't take the smallest coins (1,2 cent, not sure about 5 cent).
McDonalds and Rossmann have boxes for some sort of charity.
Airports generally have boxes for donations.
I have given up on using the 1, 2 and 5 cents - I donate them along the way if I see a box somewhere or I collect them and put them in a donation box in an airport.

In addition to the ticket counter, TXL has ticket machines just outside the terminal - and these tickets are also open tickets, to be validated when you want to use them.

There might be long lines, both at the counter and the machines. You can get a daypass AB from every bus driver. Might be by far more convenient. Just tell him you want a Tageskarte AB ("A" pronounced more like "R").

I believe if you buy it on a bus, the driver can only issue you a ticket for the same day, not the following day, because a ticket purchased from a bus driver is automatically validated (for the day of purchase).

If you want to buy it with your CC you must buy it on the Ticket Counter.

Correct. If you want a ticket for later use, you have to purchase it from an automated machine or a staffed counter. Both of which exist at TXL.

Unrelated, but this is a good point: even if the machine accept cards, VBB and DB machines will not accept credit cards for local VBB transit tickets, only debit (and possibly only German EC-Karte).

To update this thread which I started:

There are several machines outside the bus stops at TXL and they (like all other BVG ticket machines) take 5 cent coins.

I used all my 1 and 2 cent coins to pay the €3 tourist tax which the HI on Rohrdamm charged me, despite being on an award night. As the tax is 5%, this indicates that the stay was worth €60 (or rather €63 with the tax), and that I received 0.6c / 0.42p / US 0.54c value per IHG point

My ticket was checked 5 (!!) times yesterday on the U-bahn and EVERY time 2-3 fare evaders were pulled off the train. These were both locals and tourists. Ticket inspections took place both in the central area and the suburbs.

Do you mean "Maestro"?
There are difference between Maestro National and Maestro International.

I was just talking about the EC part of the cards (z.B. Girocard), not the external Maestro/V-Pay network.
