Berlin is still relatively "cheap"! In Stuttgart and Munich, it will cost you €60 if you are caught with an invalid (or no) ticket...

Schwarzfahren is akin to speeding -- most of the time there's no one there to verify you're following the law, but when you get caught, it can be very expensive.

Munich is 40EUR too. Even though I have an annual transferable pass I had to pay it once in the past 4 years because I forgot to have the current months pass with me. I have seen visitors offering to pay on the spot and being let go scot free.

BTW, it seems the MVV keeps track of your violations and when you are charged the 'increased conveyance charge' of 40€ more than 2-3 times in a certain time period they no longer allow you to ride the network or directly initiated legal proceedings against you.

So, is there a point to buying tickets? |
I lived in Berlin for 6 months, riding the S-bahn and U-Bahn all time, and the number of journeys for which my ticket was checked was ~15%. If those are odds you like to play, fare jump, but know that you have to pay your ticket ON THE SPOT. And it's not cheap. Much more expensive than buying a monthly pass would be.
(I had a card as part of going to university so I always had fare.) |
The whole idea of not buying a ticket is rediculous. If you take a ride without ticket it`s fraud. In the end the other customers has to pay for this honks....
|
Not worth it to ever travel without a ticket unless you're in a huge rush or something.
|
There are people that claim it's cheaper to not buy a ticket in the long run if you calculate the percentage of getting caught and the ticket price ;) I would definitely NOT recommend driving around without a ticket though.
|
Sorry, to step it. But the discussion about not buying a ticket and gambling is really not appropriate.
Because there are not barriers like in other cities does not necessarily mean you will not be checked. And it you are caught more than three times you might run into serious troubles. If you travel on public transporation, you have to pay a ticket. Everythings else is simply fraud and I do not want to have a discussion about this for various reasons. In so far, I am going to close this thread. FLYGVA co-moderator Germany Forum |
