Munich Immigration / Baggage / Customs - How much time to clear on average?

Apologies if it is addressed in a prior thread, my search did not yield a recent answer. I realize that time to clear immigration and customs is based on a lot of variables. I have a US passport.

I'll be coming in to MUC later this month on a US Airways flight from Philadelphia. Scheduled arrival is 08:45 on a Thursday. I will be in Envoy class. I have an appointment near Olympiapark at 11:15. Assuming the flight is on time, does this seem like sufficient time to catch a train and make it there on time?

Google navigation estimates transit time to be about 1 hour to my destination.

MUC is one of the easiest airports you'll ever navigate. You'll be through before you know it and will have plenty of time to make your appointment.

I agree. Munich is dead easy. if you don't stop at one of the outstations and do not have luggage, it will take you 10-15 minutes from arrival at the gate to the S-bahn.

per www.bahn.de it takes a little less than one hour to get to Olympiapark West. The latest you could leave the airport would be with the 10:11 S-Bahn, connecting to Strassenbahn 20 in Moosach with arrival at Olympiapark at 11:03.

Earlier than that you have the same connection every 20 minutes or so.

There is also Olympiapark Nord, which you will reach by bus, so you might want to check where exactly you need to go.

I've found http://www.mvv-muenchen.de to be easiest for finding my around Munich. MUC is served by two S-Bahn lines. Make sure you take S1.

Thank you all very much. Two followup questions:

Is there an arrivals lounge for Star Alliance Gold or business class passengers? Lots of old threads say no, but here's to hoping things have changed...

Does Germany provide any reciprocal benefits yet to Global Entry participants?

Only if you arrive on a Lufthansa flight. However, there are showers in the arrivals area.

No.

We should consider reciprocal benefits to US citizens including fingerprinting, interrogative questions and long lines. Amazingly we even allow those in in about 15 to 20 minutes (including return of luggage). We are ever so nice :D:-:

I don't want to hijack this thread but this seems to be the crowd in the know and a similar topic.

I confirmed an itineray SFO - Casablanca for April. Unfortunately, to get the right rate I needed to first route through MUC, then MUC - FRA and finally FRA - CMN.

My original itinerary allotted for 2 1/2 hours layover and then 1 hr 5 to catch the only FRA-CMN flight of the day.

I just received a schedule change notification allowing for only a 45 connecting layover in MUC. This sure seems tight. Will EU Immigration be required? Remember, I am boarding a flight to FRA.

The next hourly MUC-FRA flight has availability, is an hour later and would still allow enough transfer time to the flight FRA-CMN. I am trying to demand that they switch me without the $250 change fee they want to charge since it was there mistake in scheduling in the first place.

Should I be concerned? Do I have a leg to stand on?

If I understand you correctly your original itinerary had 2 1/2 hours layover in MUC and 1 hr 5 mins in FRA. Your new itinerary will have 45 mins in MUC and a longer layover in FRA. Which airline(s) are you flying on?

I'd be more concerned about 1 hr 5 mins in FRA than 45 mins in MUC. Assuming you are on LH or *A, you only need to clear passport control and no security in MUC and the same in FRA. You only need to go one level down in MUC but will have to change concourses in FRA.

Wow. Didn't think about that. I've been to both airports and can picture what you say. FRA is nuts! So you are saying incoming from MUC is domestic and outbound to CMN will leave from an international terminal?

Yes, all flights are LH.

The MUC-FRA flight I want to switch to would allow 1 hr 45 in MUC and 1 hr 35 in FRA. Will that be OK? Should I fight the fight??

I would stick to 45 mins in MUC and a longer layover in FRA. Assuming you are on one ticket I expect they will put you on the next flight to FRA if you miss your connection in MUC.

MUC is a much more compact airport than FRA and all you need to do is to go down one level via passport control to your departure gate. In FRA your flight will arrive in Pier A Schengen and the flight to CMN will almost certainly depart from Pier B non-Schengen. There are both in Terminal 1 but in different parts. The best way to get to your departure gate is to walk through the tunnel between A and B and clear passport control at the end of the tunnel.

Although 1 hr 35 mins should be enough for the connection in FRA, you don't need 1 hr 45 mins in MUC and there's no reason to insist on changing to a later MUC-FRA flight especially if it's going to cost a lot of money.

You may want to check the following threads in the LH/M&M forum.
