Minimum connection time through MUC, FRA?
Flying ESB - MUC - FRA - IAD. Will I have to go through passport control in MUC (since I'm connecting non-Schengen -> Schengen) and go through passport control again in FRA (since I'm connecting Schengen -> non-Schengen)?
I have two hours in each airport and I'm worried about missing my connections. Thanks. |
Welcome to FT, daymoose!
Two hours should be more than enough for connecting in MUC and sufficient for connecting in FRA but it would help if you tell us which airline(s) you will be flying. Passport control and security in MUC and passport control but no security check in FRA. |
Sorry, I should've specified that. It's Lufthansa all the way through.

In that case you could have posted your question in the Miles & More forum but you will have received the same answer. :)
In MUC you will arrive on Level I and go two levels down to Level G through security and passport control. The minimum connecting time at MUC is currently 40 minutes, so you should have more than enough time. In FRA your flight will arrive at an A gate and the flight to IAD is likely to depart from a Z gate which is one level up in the same part of the airport. You go through passport control but no security. Even some critics of FRA will say two hours should be enough for this connection. You may want to check the FRA connection guide in the M&M forum. Make sure your luggage is checked through to IAD (if you are checking any). |
i think the A gates were named because they are in alsace. we came in a Z or ZZZ gate from iad, had to do some very ugly security checks, missed our plane to lys. "they" put us on the next plane to LYS which left about 2 hrs after we arrived. not a big problem, but if the early plane was the last one from FRA, i'm certain LH would have claimed the lateness to be our problem, and we would have been sleeping on a bench. the walking and train transit time from our gate to the far end of A gates was over 45min. the security check added a considerable amount of time.
we also had a couple sets of stairs, and the very standard dead moving walkways and one escalator. we had to take only one elevator, took 3 loads to get to us. i never see any complaints about this place, only iad????? |
If you arrived at a Z gate from IAD (since the new pier A+ opened in October) you shouldn't have needed to clear security (passport control only) before your connecting flight to LYS. If you had arrived in B or C it's a different matter.
Where did your LYS flight depart from? There was no need to travel on the train if you arrived in Z and departed to LYS (presumably from an A gate). No wonder it took 45 minutes from gate to gate if you took the scenic route by train. Since the OP is connecting from Schengen to non-Schengen, there's no need for security check in FRA unless the flight to IAD departs from a C gate. |
i am planning a connection in FRA from LH to DL (two separate tickets). the LH flight should arrive at 11:30a and the DL flight departs at 1:45p. is this sufficient time to make this connection? i've done 2 hour connections from UA to LH and vv before no problems obviously, but i am not familiar with the departures for DL back to the USA and where in the airport they are located. thanks!

Should be plenty of time. You will have to transfer from terminal 1 to terminal 2 via the SkyLine, and there will be some walking involved, but 2h15m is enough.

PV_Premier, are you checking baggage?

As this question is specific to Germany, I'll move this over to the Germany forum. Please continue to follow this topic over there.

I have a similar question for travel in February. We're flying JFK>MUC>AMS, and only have a 55 minute connection. We're not planning on checking bags, but we know it's going to be a tight connection.
Hoping that we'll make it on time. |
